Full Job Description
Primary Purpose

The DeltaV Technical Lead represents Wunderlich-Malec as a trusted technical advisor, leading automation solutions that deliver measurable value to clients. This role combines deep DeltaV expertise with project leadership to ensure high-quality outcomes, strong client alignment, and repeatable engineering excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Provide overall technical leadership for DeltaV systems, guiding decisions from early concept development through commissioning and project turnover
  • Shape and influence the automation strategy and system design, ensuring scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions
  • Lead the development and review of control system architectures, standards, and implementation approaches
  • Oversee system build activities, including configuration, integration, and testing, ensuring alignment with project objectives and quality expectations
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex technical challenges, driving resolution through structured problem-solving and collaboration
  • Coordinate closely with client's engineering, quality, IT, and operations teams to align automation deliverables with overall project goals
  • Guide and mentor project team members and partners, promoting consistent engineering practices and technical excellence
  • Engage with suppliers and integrators to ensure deliverables meet technical requirements, timelines, and performance expectations
  • Maintain visibility into project execution risks and dependencies, proactively identifying and mitigating issues impacting delivery
  • Support commissioning and startup efforts by ensuring systems are robust, compliant, and ready for operational use

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline is required
  • Equivalent combination of education and progressive, hands-on automation experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree
  • Relevant industry training or certifications (e.g., Emerson DeltaV, ISA, or related automation certifications) are highly valued
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP) is considered a plus for candidates leading large-scale initiatives

Preferred Skills/Requirements
  • Deep expertise in Emerson DeltaV platform, including advanced configuration, batch design, system integration, and lifecycle support
  • Strong understanding of automation architecture within regulated manufacturing environments, including alignment with GxP and data integrity principles
  • Experience leading or contributing to large-scale capital or brownfield automation projects, with exposure to full project lifecycle delivery
  • Working knowledge of industry standards and frameworks such as ISA-88 (batch), ISA-95 (integration), and 21 CFR Part 11 compliance
  • Familiarity with system integration across plant systems, including PLCs, SCADA, MES, historians, and enterprise systems
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams, influence engineering direction, and mentor less experienced engineers
  • Strong problem-solving capability with the ability to navigate ambiguity and complex technical challenges in fast-paced project environments
  • Experience supporting or leading commissioning, startup, and qualification activities, including turnover documentation and operational readiness
  • Ability to effectively engage with clients, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams, translating technical concepts into clear, actionable outcomes
  • Demonstrated capability in managing or supporting technical aspects of project execution, including risk identification, scope alignment, and deliverable quality
  • Exposure to cybersecurity practices for industrial control systems, including role-based access, network segmentation, and system hardening
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute to technical documentation, standards development, and client deliverables

Travel & Work Environment
  • Willingness to travel to client sites to support project execution, commissioning, and key project milestones
  • Travel is expected to vary by project phase, typically ranging from 25-75%, with potential for higher on-site presence during critical delivery periods
  • Flexibility to support engagements across North America, with occasional international travel as required
  • Hybrid work environment when not on client site, with remote work options aligned to project needs

Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial automation or systems integration, with a significant portion focused on DeltaV or comparable DCS platforms
  • At least 5+ years in a technical leadership or lead engineer role, responsible for guiding design, execution, and delivery of automation solutions
  • Proven experience delivering automation projects within life sciences or other regulated industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or medical devices
  • Demonstrated track record supporting full project lifecycle execution, including design, configuration, testing, commissioning, and startup activities
  • Experience working within structured development and validation frameworks, such as SDLC, CSV, and cGMP environments
  • Background leading or coordinating cross-functional and geographically distributed teams, including internal engineering staff, contractors, and system integrators
  • Hands-on experience with control system migrations, upgrades, or system expansions in operating facilities is highly desirable
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team development and technical capability growth
  • Prior experience engaging directly with clients, including technical discussions, scope alignment, and issue resolution
