Position Overview

Dean, School of English Language Studies

SALARY: $122,226.59 - $126,843.76

LOCATION: Lynnwood, WA

DESCRIPTION:

The Dean for the School of English Language Studies provides leadership, management, planning, oversight and advocacy for faculty, staff, and programs with a goal of providing an equitable and inclusive environment for student success within the School of English Language Studies. The following departments and programs are currently included in the School of English Language Studies: Academic English (AENGL), English Language Acquisition (ELA), ELA Student Services, Trajal, and the English Language Institute (ELI)

This is an exempt position reporting to the Vice President of Instruction.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Assume primary responsibility for the recruitment, screening, orientation and continued professional development of full- and part-time faculty and staff within the School. This includes the management of the tenure process for probationary faculty in the School.
  • Supervise and support staff in Academic English, English Language Acquisition (ELA), ELA Student Services, English Language Institute (ELI) department including advisors, faculty and admin staff. Conduct evaluations of full- and part-time faculty and staff.
  • Provide leadership in the development of effective teaching and learning strategies, as well as outcomes assessment tools.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) standards and reporting requirements. Co-represent Edmonds College on the State Board's Council for Basic Skills.
  • Be responsible for student retention and success within the School.
  • Establish and maintain identified FTES targets, monitor class enrollments, student-faculty ratios, and faculty loads, and work with department chairs to adjust class schedules and offerings as needed.
  • Chair/Lead and/or participate in college-wide initiatives, committees and meetings.
  • Develop and manage School budgets (state, self-support, and contract -funded areas); provide oversight for grant and contract development, implementation and compliance.
  • Provide leadership in the division for developing goals and strategies to support the success of all students and close opportunity gaps.
  • Supervise the work of establishing/maintaining clear pathways and advising to college-level programming for English language learners.
  • Partner with the Office of International Programs to offer appropriate and relevant course modalities, content, and pathway options that meet the demands of the international education market and the demands of both college F-1 visa holders and English language learner F-1 visa holders.
  • Cultivate partnerships with Workforce Snohomish, Edmonds School District, Latino Education and Training Institute (LETI), and Refugee and Immigrant Services NW (RISNW), and seek out alternative revenue streams to foster student success and support division initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Education or closely related field
  • A minimum of two years, or equivalent, of full-time teaching experience in developmental education, English Language Acquisition, or Adult Basic Education at the adult level.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a teamwork environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Recent administrative or leadership experience, preferably at a community college.
  • Strong organizational skills.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed in an office setting, and onsite/in-person. The ability to sit at a desk/computer station, bend, stoop, walk and generally move around the office to consult with others, work within a busy environment and remain focused on tasks. The ability to speak clearly on the telephone, use a computer is required. Some tasks require lifting and moving of objects up to 30lbs. This position requires the ability to drive and use of a personal vehicle. The ability to make sound judgments is essential.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., some evening and weekend work may be required.

COMPENSATION:

Salary is $122,226.59 - $126,843.76 and is based on the Edmonds College administrative/exempt salary schedule, plus a full state benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options and more. Vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, and 24 vacation leave days per year.

FLSA Status:

The position is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
