Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the Education, Humanities, and Public Service School is responsible for the strategic growth, academic integrity, fiscal sustainability, and external visibility of the School of Education, Humanities, and Public Service, ensuring alignment with the University's strategic priorities, including:

Description of Work

The Dean of the School of Education, Humanities & Public Service serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the school, providing visionary leadership to advance excellence in teaching, research, service, and community engagement. The Dean is responsible for advancing high-quality, workforce-aligned academic programs; fostering student success; supporting faculty excellence; building partnerships with a wide range of community and professional stakeholders; fostering interdisciplinary collaboration; promoting civic engagement; and preparing graduates to serve as educators, leaders, and professionals in a global society. The position ensures that programs remain relevant, innovative, and responsive to regional and global workforce needs.

Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
  • Administrative leadership experience including program planning,
  • Budget management and faculty development,
  • Effective organizational structures and practices to facilitate institutional effectiveness;
  • Experience in evaluating personnel, program assessment and improvement, and advancing a stimulating and supportive environment for teaching, research, creative performance, scholarship and service; possess knowledge of current educational methods, curricula and procedures; effective interpersonal, communications, and relationship-building skills;
  • Experience with grant writing, fundraising, or external funding initiatives; skilled in leading organizational change, innovation, and program development; and commitment to modeling high standards of ethics, continual learning, and actions that meet public needs and interests.


Minimum Training and Experience
  • Terminal degree from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines in the School of Education, Humanities, or Public Service or a directly related field of study with significant academic leadership experience at the level of Dean, Assistant/Associate Dean or Department Chairperson;
  • Record of scholarly activity commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the School's departments.
  • Experience in leading strategic change both within and outside a university setting to meet organizational goals;
  • Experience in leading people toward an organization's vision, mission and goals;
  • Experience in showing business acumen in managing human, financial, and information resources strategically;
  • Experience in building coalitions internally and with state agencies, other governments and organizations to achieve common goals.
