Job SummaryReporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs & Strategic Initiatives, the Dean of Students is responsible for policy development, administration, supervision of staff, budget development and oversight, program planning and implementation, as well as providing strategic direction to departments and programs within the following areas: Greek Life, Housing and Residential Life, Student Conduct and Care, and Setzer Student Center. They will serve as chairperson of the LU Critical Assessment, Response and Evaluation Team and as advisor to the Student Government Association. The Dean of Students serves as a representative for students and represents them when decisions that directly affect the students' education and well-being are considered. They coordinate and implement divisional initiatives and other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives.
Essential Job FunctionsStudent Conduct and Care:- Serves as the chief student conduct and hearing officer. Will manage student conduct due processes.
- Trains hearing staff and hearing panels; adjudicates student code of conduct violations, and follows up with all hearing and sanctioning processes.
- Respond to emergencies, crises, and mental health issues with Lamar students, work closely with the Student Health Center, Housing & Residence Life, and University Police to address student issues and student conduct.
- Participate in a 24-hour on-call response.
- Work closely with students and the appropriate student engagement and academic affairs on the student medical withdrawal process.
- Assist with the evacuation process of students living in residence halls to an off-site location for a tropical storm or hurricane.
- This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and a responsible employee under Title IX.
- Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university.
- Ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations within the Texas State University System (TSUS), and that Student Conduct and Care handles judicial matters and complaints/grievances expeditiously and professionally.
Administration, Compliance, and Policy Development:- Assists the Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives in establishing best practices.
- Promptly and thoroughly communicate need-to-know issues with the Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives.
- Ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations within the Texas State University System (TSUS), and that Student Conduct and Care handles judicial matters and complaints/grievances expeditiously and professionally.
- Participate in and provide guidance where appropriate in the analysis, review, creation, and interpretation of policies and procedures related to students.
- Reviews and updates policies, procedures, the Student Handbook, and Code of Student Conduct as approved by TSUS.
Programming, Engagement, and Recruitment:- Develops and implements programming that promotes and actively engages the campus community and coordinates annual planning and assessment activities in support of programming to remain responsive to student needs and guidance.
- Engages in University activities focused on student recruitment to the University, such as the Cardinal View recruitments, Involvement Fairs, summer Freshman and Transfer Orientation sessions.
Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness: - Directs the divisional assessment efforts, analyzes data to develop comprehensive learning outcomes, and assesses institutional effectiveness.
- Assist in the development of goals, objectives, and timelines that match the institutional and divisional goals as outlined in the University's strategic plan.
Minimum and Desired QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:- A master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education is required.
- Minimum of five years progressively more responsible administrative experience as a full-time student affairs professional with student conduct, Title IX, Greek Life, student activities and student events, assembly and free speech, and student organizations.
- Possess the ability to work effectively and develop positive working relationships with all constituents, including staff, students, and faculty.
- The scope of this position requires evening and weekend work.
- Must reside within 30 miles of the Lamar University campus to meet on-call and emergency response requirements
- In addition, applicants must have the ability to navigate circumstances that require effective negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution.
- Knowledge of general business practices and fiscal management is helpful.
- Able to work with students and student organizations in planning student events.
Desired Qualifications:- Doctoral degree in Student Affairs and/or Higher Education preferred.
- Prefer experience with Maxient and Banner.

- Demonstrated understanding of student development principles and experience working with care teams and behavioral intervention processes to address student needs.
- Knowledge of and experience as it relates to the assessment of student engagement, divisional/departmental programs, and services.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster positive working relations and partnerships within the University.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Physical Requirements:- Moderate physical activity. Can require handling objects of average-weight up to 30 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (2) hours per day.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend hours as required, and emergency management and/or crisis management.
- Willing to assist with the evacuation process of residence students to an off-site location for a tropical storm or hurricane.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting, for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment.
- Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
