Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The College of Fine and Applied Arts is a dynamic and innovative group of seven academic departments, bringing together a variety of perspectives, experiences and real-world education to provide unique opportunities for student success. Its departments include Applied Design, Art, Communication, Military Science and Leadership, Sustainable Development, Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment, and Theatre and Dance. The college supports over 3,100 undergraduate and graduate students, ~200 full-time faculty and ~30 staff. We are also proud of our nearly 15,000 alumni from across the college.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Earned terminal degree in a field represented in the College of Fine and Applied Arts;

2. A demonstrated record of sustained, intentional leadership and growth at the level of dean, associate dean, department chair or similar position;

3. Record of scholarship/creative activity and teaching, and eligibility for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor;

4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build ethical, effective partnerships with stakeholders across and beyond the college;

5. Demonstrated experience with recruiting, retaining and supporting a wide range of talented faculty and staff;

6. Dynamic team-building and leadership skills with evidence of deep appreciation of, and support for, shared governance;

7. Commitment to creating a welcoming environment for students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, while advancing innovative curricula that drive student recruitment, retention, and graduation.

8. Evidence of success in strategic planning, fiscal planning, and resource management; and

9. Successful experience in or demonstrated capacity for fundraising.

Special consideration will be accorded to candidates who demonstrate the following experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

1. Knowledge of accreditation processes and governing bodies related to programs in the college;

2. Experience working in a college or school that houses a diverse range of departments and programs;

3. Ability to foster excellence in teaching, scholarship and research while supporting the professional growth and development of faculty and staff;

4. Broad understanding across the multiple disciplines and distinct academic programs that comprise the college;

5. Demonstrated commitment to transparent fiscal management;

6. Strategic thinking that includes the ability to understand and prioritize competing needs;

7. Ability to analyze, operationalize, and create transparent processes and procedures that function across the college;

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Dean serves as the academic leader of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and its seven academic departments.

The Dean will:

- Provide outstanding leadership to realize the vision and achieve the academic goals of

the college, and its related Departments;

- Support integrated strategic planning and institutional effectiveness initiatives;

- Oversee strategic directions, personnel, curricula, and budgets for the college;

-Advance and support the wide variety of students, faculty and staff;

- Promote a climate of student success for a broad community of learners;

- Preside at meetings involving the faculty of the college and appoint ad hoc committees

to study special problems affecting the college;

- Prepare periodic reports and keep the provost and executive vice chancellor fully

informed of the state of affairs and needs within the college;

- Engage departmental chairs and the council of the college in frequent appraisals of

objectives, procedures, strengths, weaknesses of curricular programs;

- Collaborate with faculty in a climate of shared governance;

- Coordinate the assignment of classroom space and facilities among departments and

plan for capital improvements; and

- Collaborate with other members of the Academic Affairs team to achieve university

objectives.
