Job Duties

As a Database Administrator at the Virginia Employment Commission, you will serve as the technical expert responsible for managing and securing the databases that power our mission-critical systems. You'll administer logical and physical database environments, primarily SQL Server, ensuring compliance with security policies and agency standards. Your work will include designing and documenting efficient data models and schemas, collaborating with developers to optimize performance, and supporting application development through clean, maintainable code and thorough testing. You'll monitor database health daily, maintain backups, test recovery processes, and apply security patches promptly to safeguard data integrity. In addition, you'll handle sensitive information with strict confidentiality, fulfill responsibilities related to the Federal Tax Information (FTI) Offset Program, and respond to security incidents in accordance with state and federal requirements. Beyond technical duties, you'll mentor team members, participate in on-call rotations, and contribute to strategic planning initiatives, continuously improving processes to enhance reliability and performance.

Minimum Qualifications
• Extensive knowledge of and experience with SQL Server databases and systems, and experience as a DBA in a multi-platform enterprise environment.
• Experience with government security policies (such as NIST 800-53, IRS Publication 1075) and implementing those policies around database security and application data handling.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
• Considerable experience with analysis and development of SQL Server and other database modules, scripts, complex queries, and report and job packaging.
• Demonstrated ability to function as a technical expert on complex databases, applications, systems, software, and projects; interact effectively in a team environment; and work independently, typically with strict deadlines, heavy workloads, and changing priorities.
• Working experience with data masking, scrambling PII data for lower environment, and restricting access
• Experience with SQL Server and managed instances in Azure.

Additional Considerations
• Experience with Oracle, MySQL, and MariaDB databases.
