Departmental Overview

Development and Alumni Relations Unit Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, data management, gift management, reporting and analytics, and more.

Advancement Operations Unit Overview

Advancement Operations develops and delivers the centralized business systems and services that support the work of UC Berkeley's 30 decentralized fundraising units-helping them collaborate and communicate in order to maximize their collective results. Advancement Operations also provides governance through its role as the official source of alumni and fundraising data. The Advancement Information Services (AIS) unit develops and delivers the primary business data and systems that support the work of UC Berkeley's centralized and decentralized fundraising activities. AIS oversees several interrelated information technology systems and tools, including the Cal Advancement Data System (CADS), the database in which advancement professionals research and record fundraising activity. AIS encompasses three units: Data and Business Solutions, Technology Services, and Strategic Planning and Management.

Data and Business Solutions: Data Quality & Integration Team Overview

Data Quality & Integration (DQI) is the office responsible for data architecture and the integrity of data that flows across UDAR data ecosystems. DQI helps the organization meet programmatic and strategic goals by providing accurate, complete, auditable, and compliant data that documents relationships and operational activity. DQI protects, archives, enhances, and manages data; defines and enforces schemas, integration patterns, and metadata; and delivers data through efficient processes and reliable systems in a secure environment. In addition, DQI provides stakeholders with support on integration, data quality, and governance issues, and represents the unit on operational and strategic data governance committees.

Position Summary

The Data Systems Analyst is a technical role focused on data quality, integrity, and the strategic flow of data across UC Berkeley's advancement ecosystem. This work enables the advancement community to leverage data to drive alumni engagement, donor relations, and fundraising strategy. This position ensures the integrity, accessibility, and strategic use of advancement data across our Salesforce and SQL-based environments, as well as the various tools used by University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) to engage constituents.

The analyst creates and maintains integration documentation and data maps; performs data discovery, profiling, mapping, logic extraction, and gap analysis; and conducts system testing and validation, troubleshoots data issues, and supports compliance with UDAR's data retention requirements. The analyst is responsible for the full lifecycle of data quality-from designing audit methodologies and executing QA test cases to performing large-scale data loads and complex modifications within the CRM to ensure data remains accurate and consistent with business rules.

The role requires fluency in data integration management, data analysis, and data validation and testing. The analyst ensures compliance with data privacy standards (such as FERPA and donor confidentiality), and partners closely with Technology Services and business units.

Responsibilities
  • Analyzes large datasets through deep-dive profiling and discovery to identify data patterns, perform gap analysis, and document source-to-target mapping logic for legacy and new integrations.
  • Creates and maintains Integration Requirement Documentation-including data transformation rules, business logic extraction, and system dependencies, applying broadly defined business rules and data administration concepts to manage technical data mapping across UDAR systems.
  • Serves as a liaison between technical teams to translate business needs into technical specifications.
  • Protects integrity, authenticity, and security of data in all assignment activities.
  • Develops audit methodologies, troubleshoots data discrepancies, performs root cause analysis, recommends corrective actions, and collaborates with business partners to ensure continuous data integrity.
  • Performs complex data loads and large-scale corrections within the CRM, conducting rigorous data quality checks against existing business rules and current records to ensure accuracy and consistency during loads, migrations, or cleanup efforts.
  • Implements data quality guidelines and protocols for the department's data integration, import, acquisition, and cleanup projects.
  • Develops and executes test cases for data integrations, migrations, and cleanup projects; coordinates User Acceptance Testing (UAT), validates outputs against business requirements, and documents outcomes.
  • Supports compliance with UDAR's Data Availability Practice.
  • Implements related business processes and manages existing data models and schemas to support integration projects and data quality initiatives.
  • Identifies opportunities to reduce technical debt and enhance system efficiency. Supports strategic initiatives and ensures data systems align with organizational priorities, and supports the foundation necessary to integrate more complex data assets into the CRM in the future.
  • Continuously works on skill building and professional development to advance technical expertise and data management knowledge.
  • Stays current on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and data governance trends to enhance contributions to UDAR's data strategy.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of experience performing deep-dive data profiling and discovery on large datasets to identify patterns, conduct gap analyses, and define source-to-target mapping logic.
  • Minimum of two years of experience preparing and communicating data models unassisted.
  • Minimum of two years of experience identifying and resolving data quality issues and implementing data governance requirements
  • Demonstrated experience performing large-scale data loads or complex modifications, ensuring data integrity against business rules and existing system records.
  • Advanced skills in SQL and scripting languages like Python for complex data analysis, transformation, and automation of data processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Salesforce object structures and data mining using SOQL .
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Google Sheets / Excel for data manipulation, formula-based analysis, and the documentation of technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems
  • Ability to conduct quality assurance testing with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct work using relevant state, federal, and global rules and regulations as it pertains to data management and privacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across all levels of the organization.

  • Knowledge of fundraising operations, donor relations, and alumni engagement processes within a higher education or non-profit environment.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $102,000.00 - $112,000.00.
