Job Description:

Our Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics and Global Services supporting Caterpillar dealers and customers. Our teams work together in critical areas that leverage digital capabilities, technology and operational excellence.

As a Data Scientist, you will be responsible for modernizing a critical business simulation tool by converting legacy FORTRAN code into a modern programming language such as C++. You will partner with business stakeholders and end users to validate functionality, test solutions, and ensure the new application meets operational needs. This role requires strong programming skills, the ability to learn complex business processes, and a data-driven mindset. While initially focused on this high-impact software modernization effort, you will also support data science and analytics initiatives using large datasets to drive informed business decisions.

  • This role is located in Morton, IL and does not offer relocation.
  • This role is 1st shift, Monday - Friday.
  • This role is 100% on-site with no opportunity for hybrid or remote schedules
  • This role requires up to 10% domestic travel


What You Will Do:

  • Modernize a critical business simulation tool by converting legacy FORTRAN code into a modern programming language, such as C++.


  • Analyze, maintain, and enhance complex simulation models used to evaluate significant business and operational changes.


  • Partner with business stakeholders and end users to validate requirements, conduct testing, and ensure functional alignment between legacy and modernized solutions.


  • Apply business context and user feedback to identify gaps, troubleshoot issues, and improve solution effectiveness.


  • Direct data gathering, data mining, and data processing activities across large and complex datasets.


  • Develop and implement data models, machine learning solutions, and advanced analytics to support business decision-making.


  • Explore and apply Natural Language Processing (NLP), text analytics, and semantic data capabilities to solve business challenges.


  • Define analytical requirements, conduct research, and communicate actionable insights through data visualization and reporting tools.


  • Research and optimize data models, algorithms, and analytical methods to improve accuracy and effectiveness.


  • Perform statistical modeling and analysis related to Caterpillar and dealer parts demand, inventory, and supply chain performance.


  • Develop and enhance inventory optimization techniques and execute inventory management simulations.


  • Create Power BI dashboards and visualizations to support reporting, exploratory analysis, and business insights.


  • Conduct ad hoc data analysis, data processing, and analytics-based research in support of project teams.


  • Utilize programming languages and analytical tools such as Python, R, SAS, SQL, and/or Dataiku to develop data-driven solutions.


  • Build AI-driven solutions leveraging LLM prompts, agentic frameworks, and evaluation techniques, utilizing tools such as LangChain and LangGraph


  • Develop and refine scalable analytical solutions that address complex business needs across diverse operating environments.


  • Build expertise in inventory management systems, parts management practices, and business processes.


  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts, analyses, and recommendations to stakeholders and internal customers.


What You Have (Basic Requirements):

  • Programming Languages: Knowledge of basic concepts and capabilities of programming; ability to use tools, techniques and platforms in order to write and modify programming languages.


  • Business Statistics: Knowledge of the statistical tools, processes, and practices to describe business results in measurable scales; ability to use statistical tools and processes to assist in making business decisions.


  • Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.


  • Machine Learning: Knowledge of principles, technologies and algorithms of machine learning; ability to develop, implement and deliver related systems, products and services.


  • Query and Database Access Tools: Knowledge of data management systems; ability to use, support and access facilities for searching, extracting and formatting data for further use.


  • Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.

What Will Set You Apart (Top Candidates Will Have):

  • Experience modernizing legacy systems and converting code to current programming languages and development standards (e.g., FORTRAN to C++).
  • Hands-on experience developing, testing, and validating software solutions in complex technical environments.
  • Strong programming skills with Python, R, SAS, SQL, and/or other analytical and machine learning tools.
  • Experience applying machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to solve business challenges.
  • Knowledge of supply chain, inventory management, or parts operations and the ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Experience building data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools.
  • Background in statistical modeling, inventory optimization, simulation, or operations research.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Power Automate, Excel VBA, or similar technologies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts and analytical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated passion for big data, analytics, problem solving, and continuous learning in a business-focused environment.

Summary Pay Range:

$89,210.00 - $144,960.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
