This Data Scientist role is an exciting interdisciplinary role where you will be responsible for store labour planning, as well as providing analytical support for strategic initiatives and operational efficiencies. The incumbent will present relevant analysis and prepare reports that support various levels of the organization from store managers to senior executives. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with large sets of data and possess familiarity with forecasting, budgeting, and planning activities within a typical FP&A role. This position will frequently collaborate with the Store Operations leadership teams in SportChek and Mark’s. It provides opportunities to gain insights into advanced analytics, machine learning, and automation as applied to finance and store operations processes.
Play a key role in managing the Store Payroll spend at SportChek and Mark’s
Identify areas or opportunities within the business for operational efficiencies and/or revenue growth, analyzing and implementing changes that will influence store operations strategy and drive improved profitability.
Lead compensation plan model design target setting to drive performance of strategic metrics and meet financial targets.
Lead and participate in planning meetings to support ongoing business initiatives.
Collaborate with many teams to unlock new analytics that drive common objectives.
Be an Automation Champion – develop self-serve analytics to drive value generating activities in our 550+ stores across Mark’s and SportChek
Oversee analytical processes leveraging store financial data including income statement data.
What you bring
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a business, analytics, or finance role
Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA) and/or master’s degree in MMA, MBA, or analytics is considered an asset.
Ability to clearly and confidently, communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Ability to manage multiple projects, driving key business results under tight deadlines.
Strong problem solving, analytical, and strategic thinking skills; able to see the “big picture” in a complex business environment.
Working Knowledge or interest in BI tools such as PowerBI, and/or Tableau is an asset.
Knowledge of database management, information management, and data mart design along with hands-on experience using data analysis / workflow tools such as Knime or Alteryx is an asset.
Working knowledge of Python, SQL or other coding languages and experience with Azure Synapse and/or Databricks.
Prior experience in machine learning or predictive analytics would be an asset.
