Full Job Description
Data Engineering Manager (Data Platform & Systems Integration)

Role Overview

The Data Engineering Manager is a senior technical leader who sets architectural direction and holds accountability for two closely related engineering teams: data engineering and systems integration. This person doesn't build alone - they lead engineers who do the hands-on work, ensuring the right architecture is in place and the team has what it needs to execute. This is a high-impact position within a fast-growing organization where the right person can make a measurable difference in how Maxwood's technology stack scales across brands.
Responsibilities
  • Set architectural direction for Maxwood's cloud data platform, including data warehouse design, medallion layer structure, and AI-readiness, and guide the data engineering team in executing against it
  • Establish standards for ELT/ETL pipeline design across data sources including Shopify, marketplaces, ERP, and third-party SaaS platforms, and hold the team accountable to them
  • Drive data modeling decisions that serve BI, analytics, and AI initiatives, in partnership with BI Analysts and AI Specialists
  • Own the technical relationship with the data platform (Microsoft Fabric), including resource management, capacity planning, and optimization strategy
  • Set and enforce data quality, governance, and documentation standards across the team
  • Define the integration architecture connecting Shopify Plus to Maxwood's SaaS ecosystem (platforms like Gorgias, Salsify, ParcelLab, Klaviyo, and Constructor) and direct integrations engineers in building and maintaining those connections
  • Establish integration patterns, API standards, and error handling frameworks for the team to follow
  • Review and approve integration designs before build, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability
  • Directly manage a team of data and integrations engineers, including a DBA, a Data Engineer, and Software Integrations Engineers
  • Provide technical mentorship, career development, and performance management across two engineering disciplines
  • Partner with Product Owners on capacity and prioritization without owning the project management function
  • Support special projects as needed
What Success Looks Like
  • A data engineering team operating with clear architectural standards, reliable pipelines, and a well-governed data platform
  • An integrations engineering team with consistent patterns, documented designs, and a stable, low-maintenance SaaS ecosystem
  • Engineers across both disciplines who are growing, engaged, and producing their best work
  • Architecture decisions that are well-reasoned, documented, and understood across the broader technology organization
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, systems architecture, or a closely related technical discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to set architectural direction and lead engineers in executing against it, not just doing the work yourself
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based data warehouse architecture (Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Databricks, Synapse, BigQuery, or similar)
  • Deep proficiency with SQL and data modeling concepts (star schema, medallion architecture, dimensional modeling)
  • Experience establishing standards and governance for ELT/ETL pipelines at scale
  • Experience directing third-party system integration work via REST APIs and iPaaS platforms
  • 2+ years managing engineers across different technical disciplines, with a track record of mentorship and team development
  • Preferred: Microsoft Fabric or Azure ecosystem experience (Lakehouses, Dataflows Gen2, Azure Data Factory, Power BI)
  • Preferred: iPaaS platform experience (Celigo, Boomi, MuleSoft, Workato, or similar)
  • Preferred: ecommerce or multi-brand retail technology background
  • Preferred: dbt or similar data transformation framework experience
Core Competencies
  • Detail-oriented and reliable
  • Hands-on and hardworking
  • Clear communicator
  • Works well independently and as part of a team
Benefits
  • 401(k) matching
  • Dental Insurance
  • Employee Discount
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • Health Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
