Job Details

The Senior Data Engineer maintains complex data systems while delivering improvements to existing processes and building new solutions for our Pharmacy Benefit Management clients. This position works collaboratively with peer engineers, and with business stakeholders, balancing quality work and implementing best practices against business demands. Work must be carried out in a structured engineering process, respecting the special compliance considerations of healthcare data.

The Senior Data Engineer will have a strong understanding of data management and data warehousing who can collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement scalable, complex data solutions that drive analytics and business intelligence and enable better financial and clinical outcomes. We are looking for an individual who can think nimbly and is passionate about technology. They will have an exceptional understanding of functional programming as well as modern software engineering design paradigms.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in an Agile development environment; actively participate in and contribute to all Scrum ceremonies.

  • Design, develop and deliver solutions per requirements and committed schedules.

  • Work closely with Product Owner in evaluating current systems and making decisions on future development.

  • Test, debug, and add enhancements to existing code, processes, or reports.

  • Maintain existing processes, including but not limited to: VisualCron schedules, SQL/ETL procedures, and reporting

  • Assist in troubleshooting pharmacy claim related issues , reports and processes.

  • Support existing .NET applications and subsequent SQL code tied to NCPDP Pharmacy Encounter data submissions.

  • Produce detailed technical specifications based on requirements and design.

  • Monitor and optimize database performance, including query tuning and indexing strategies

  • Review new and existing processes and provide recommendations for reliable and maintainable code.

  • Analyze and research software requirements to determine feasibility of design and market requirements within time and cost constraints.

  • Serve as a technical expert in the design, development, coding, testing, and debugging of new software or complex enhancements to existing software.

  • Learn new technologies and resolve challenges involved with integrating them with our Cloud and product infrastructure.

  • Proactively raise problems and solutions to staff engineers and management.

  • Communicate and propose solutions to updates, changes, and risks to stakeholders.

  • Share knowledge to help develop and advance the team through mentorship.

  • Keep abreast of emerging trends and best practices in database development and related technologies

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or 4+ years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Masters degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study preferred.

Experience

  • Proficient in database design, normalization, and data modeling

  • Strong ability with dimensional data modeling and OLAP principles.

  • 10+ years of SQL database development, working with the full Microsoft SQL Server toolset (SSIS, SSRS, SSMS, SSAS, RDBMS).

  • 5+ years experience with Data Warehouse methodologies.

  • Expertise in query tuning, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based database solutions (e.g., Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS).

  • Advanced SQL skills, including data modeling, DBO creation, management, and indexing.

  • Experience implementing high availability, high throughput, scalable systems.

  • Expertise in identifying and diagnosing application and database related issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.

  • Strong ability with dimensional data modeling and OLAP principles.

  • Experience with PowerShell, Python

  • Experience using provided tools (AWS, GitLab, Visual Studio).

  • Experience with agile methodology (Scrum, Kanban, Lean, etc.) preferred.

  • Familiarity with .NET, C#, JSON, XML, VisualCron, PowerBI

  • Familiarity with reporting and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).

  • Knowledge of non-relational databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) and big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).

Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in healthcare technology, online pharmacy claims adjudication preferred.

  • Knowledge of pharmacy industry standards such as NCPDP, HL7, ANSI X12, and/or related drug database terminologies and classifications

  • Knowledge of Medicare Part D, PDE submissions & returns, pharmacy claims and benefit management

  • Demonstrated ability to be creative, flexible, and passionate about building quality solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to architect, design, develop and implement solutions around a micro-service and monolithic architectures.

  • Skilled in written and verbal communication with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently as needed.

  • Has initiative and follow-through on projects with minimal supervision or guidance.

  • Demonstrated expertise to work in multiple technical areas or disciplines.

  • Interest and ability to learn other coding languages and technologies as needed.

Physical/Mental Demands: This position is administrative in nature and will present physical demands requisite to a position requiring: hearing, seeing, sitting, standing, talking, and walking. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to commute to multiple site locations within assigned territory. May be necessary to work extended hours as needed.

Schedule:This is a full-time position with an expectation to work an average of 40 hours per week and be available outside of normal business hours to meet customer expectations on an ad-hoc basis. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
