As a Data Center Security Manager at AWS, you will be the primary point of contact for physical security posture across your assigned availability zones, sites, or campuses. You must be able to operate with limited guidance, adapt operational plans to difficult and changing security scenarios, make trade-offs between time, quality, and resources, and communicate clearly and compellingly across an increasing diversity of locales, roles, and functions.

A day in the life
As a Data Center Security Manager, you will start your day reviewing overnight security operations reports and incident summaries, ensuring continuity across your assigned availability zones, sites, or campuses. You'll connect with your team to prioritize tasks, address emerging concerns, and align on critical deliverables.
Your mornings typically involve a mix of strategic planning and hands-on execution. You might spend time developing security program enhancements where strategy and priorities aren't yet defined, conducting site walkthroughs to assess physical security controls, or collaborating with cross-functional partners - including Facilities, IT Operations, and Regional Leadership - to address security gaps or implement new protective measures. You'll manage multiple concurrent projects at the cluster level while continuously triaging priorities and making trade-offs between time, quality, and resources.
Afternoons often focus on stakeholder engagement and program management. You'll meet with internal customers to understand their security requirements, brief leadership on program status and risk posture, and assess vendor compliance - requesting corrective actions when necessary. You may contribute to QBR inputs, write PR/FAQs and narratives, or develop solutions to difficult security challenges that require creative problem-solving in the absence of established procedures.
Throughout the day, you'll balance independent decision-making with collaborative problem-solving, adapting operational plans to changing security scenarios. You'll optimize existing SOPs, eliminate low-value processes, and create mitigation plans when problems arise. You'll also dedicate time to mentoring, recruiting, and driving continuous improvement across your security programs.
Your day concludes with planning for the next day's priorities, documenting progress on key projects, and ensuring your team has clear guidance. In this role, no two days are exactly alike - you must be comfortable with ambiguity, difficult trade-off decisions, and delivering exceptional security services with limited guidance.
