Full Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
Under the direction of the Public Defender, the Criminal Division Director isresponsible for major criminal cases to meet the constitutional and statutoryobligations of Lenawee County with regard to indigent defendants.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the generalsupervision of the Public Defender, Deputy Public Defender or designee.

Supervision Exercised: Supervision is exercised over AssistantPublic Defenders, as well as immediate support staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee this class may be called uponto do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of thetasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
• Oversee misdemeanor complaints for assignment.
• Determination of conflicts in assigned cases.
• Representation in all felony cases.
• Act as a liaison between attorneys and courtstaff.
• Attend department meetings at the request of thedepartment head.
• Report to department head on a regular basis.
• Implement policies of the department head
• Monitor and supervise work performed byemployees subordinate to this position.
• Perform related work as required.

Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications: An employee in this class, uponappointment should have the equivalent of the following training,qualifications and/or experience.
• An undergraduate degree and a Juris Doctordegree with a certificate of admission to the State Bar of Michigan andauthority to practice law through the state.
• Have a minimum of five (5) years of experiencein the practice of criminal law.
• Have a least three (3) years of progressivelymore responsible experience in the administration of legal services.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles,methods, and practices of legal research and investigation.
• Considerable knowledge of judicial proceduresand of the rules of evidence.
• Considerable knowledge of pertinent state,federal and local laws and regulations.
• Considerable knowledge of legal reference sources.
• Ability to analyze legal documents and reportsand to make accurate interpretations.
• Ability to work effectively with the public, lawenforcement agencies, and other governmental units, and employees.
• Admittance to practice in federal courts is desirable.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:
• Works inan office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipmentas needed to perform duties.
• The noise in the work environment is typical ofthat of an office with frequent contact with clients.
• Working with inmate population with high risk ofmental health and substance abuse concerns.
• Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reachwith hands and arms; climb and balance.
• Will at times be required to climb and life upto 30 pounds.
• Bends, stoops, and reaches in order to file,search for and retrieve records and documents.
• Manual dexterity and regular fine-finger andhand/wrist motions are required for operating a keyboard, writing and filing.
• Must be able to identify and address the needsof clients.
• Must be able to hear and speak over the phoneand in one-on-one communication needs.
