Credit Risk Manager

Houston TX | Credit

This is a senior-level energy credit risk role combining credit analysis, trading exposure management, collateral and liquidity management, contract negotiation, quantitative risk modeling, and process improvement.

How You’ll Power the Future

  • Own counterparty credit risk management across power and gas trading portfolios, including daily exposure monitoring and preparation of clear, decision ready risk reporting for senior management and key stakeholders.

  • Perform ongoing creditworthiness assessments through proactive monitoring of counterparty financial condition, market developments, and industry trends; recommend appropriate credit limits and collateral requirements.

  • Manage collateral for bilateral and cleared transactions, coordinating with various internal stakeholders.

  • Develop and maintain credit risk models and metrics, including Potential Future Exposure (PFE), to support portfolio level and counterparty specific risk analysis and decision making.

  • Lead initiatives to improve automation and operational efficiency within the credit function through cross functional collaboration.

  • Maintain and govern credit terms, limits, and related data within the company’s ETRM system, ensuring data integrity and auditability.

  • Independently negotiate credit terms in enabling agreements and credit support documentation across multiple business lines (ISDA, NAESB, PPAs, etc.); experience with lien-based structures preferred.

  • Conduct stress testing of hedge portfolios to evaluate incremental liquidity requirements under adverse market conditions.

  • Analyze valuation changes across trading products and clearly communicate key drivers, risk implications, and portfolio impacts to commercial stakeholders.

  • Evaluate and explain changes in Initial Margin (IM), Variation Margin (VM), and Net Option Value (NOV) resulting from market movements, volatility, and portfolio composition.

What You Have

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline; advanced degree or professional certification such as CFA or FRM preferred.

  • Deep understanding of ISO/RTO market operations and associated credit requirements, including collateral, settlement, and default frameworks.

  • Proven ability to analyze financial statements, assess counterparty creditworthiness, and set risk appropriate credit limits across a diverse portfolio.

  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to confidently engage, influence, and constructively challenge traders, marketers, and senior leadership on risk decisions.

  • Highly organized and self-directed, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize competing deadlines, exercise sound judgment, and operate effectively in a fast-paced trading environment.

  • Able to meet requirements for nuclear plant background clearance, where applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive credit risk management experience within the power and gas trading sector, including advanced knowledge on derivatives and complex hedging structures.

  • Hands on experience managing exchange traded and cleared exposures, with a strong grasp of margin drivers (initial margin, variation margin, net option value) and their impact on liquidity and capital usage.

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, VBA, and SQL preferred.
