The posting is for an Engineering Supervisor I that will serve as the County Maintenance Engineer for Randolph County. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising and directing various aspects of Highway Maintenance operations including DOT staff and purchase order contract construction. Respond to inquiries from the public, DOT Management, Media, etc., regarding DOT policies and procedures, division projects, plans and proposed work. Position has Emergency Call Back status and must be able to respond to Highway emergencies and work during inclement weather events. Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of all field and office engineering instruments; ability to understand, explain and administer contracts; ability to interpret plans, provisions and specifications; ability to interpret policies and regulations; and the ability to establish working relationships between the department and citizens.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesManagement prefers applicants with the following:- Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
- Experience in the use of professional engineering skills and knowledge to trouble shoot and solve highway maintenance problems
- Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
- Experience in conducting meetings with employees, citizens and public officials to conduct investigations and resolve various issues
- Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Additional Expectations:Ability to supervise and monitor maintenance programs to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials; to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within limits of budget; supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees; communicate effectively; and maintain positive working relationships. Work includes emergency situations, nights, and weekends. Must have the ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain. Will be subject to high volumes of traffic and extreme temperatures/weather conditions. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe footwear required.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
