Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager (Counselling Services), the incumbent will work with 2SLGBTQ+ students within our community. The incumbent will assess client's psychological and emotional development; plans and implements therapeutic interventions; participates in the ongoing evaluation of counselling service delivery. The incumbent is responsible to provide quality health care to the Carleton University community in accordance with the policies, goals and objectives of Health & Counselling Services (HCS).

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Takes an intersectional, community-focused, trauma-informed, and self-reflexive approach to working with 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and communities.
• The incumbent must have lived experience and knowledge of the impacts and barriers that 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and communities face and relevant lived experience of gender and sexuality marginality, understanding of systemic barriers faced by those from marginalized and underrepresented communities and its impacts, passionate about contributing to positive social change and commitment to trans and 2SLGBTQ+ affirming care. A demonstrated commitment to critical self-reflection, personal cultural awareness.
• Previous or current experience providing psychotherapy and crisis intervention to individuals with a broad range of potentially complex mental health issues. This includes experience and confidence assessing and working with people who have experienced trauma, and who may be at risk of suicide or self-harm.
• Experience in clinical case formulation and treatment planning in a mental health setting.
• Experience responding to clients in emotional crisis or urgent need in an unscheduled or drop-in format.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop therapeutic rapport in a non-judgmental manner with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience working in a shared care model with an interdisciplinary team.
• Understanding of the developmental stage of this age group, key mental health issues, and the unique stresses experienced by students in post-secondary.
• Recognizes limitations, knows when to consult and seeks supervision when appropriate.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of a master's degree in a counselling field and/or social work, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Current valid registration with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Worker or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario as a full Registered Psychotherapist (RP).
• Five years working as a counsellor and psychotherapist of which at least three years are in a university or college setting.

Health and Safety Requirements

This position is regularly required to work on campus in person.
