Full Job Description
Position Summary:

The Cost Accountant is responsible for ensuring timely, high quality and accurate cost information is delivered to the Lead Cost Accountant. This position plays a key role in the interface with Supply chain, Manufacturing Engineering, Research and Development, Finance and Production. This includes (but is not limited to) inventory standard cost analysis, and ad-hoc projects as required. A thorough understanding cost allocation and overhead rates is required.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Prepare the inventory journal entry using monthly inventory data extract, i.e. inventory financial report (this is used to pull inventory stock status, slow moving, devaluation and excess inventory) and enter journal entry to reconcile to the balance sheet
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and Finance to determine month end accrual and transfer journal entries
  • Perform monthly forecast reporting and analysis to provide cost information (allowance) to the business
  • Assist in gross margin analysis.
  • Heavy involvement in Annual manufacturing overhead rate preparation and analysis
  • Review actual versus budgeted expense and complete reconciliation as required and provide explanation of variances
  • Analyze and prepare reports periodically for the difference between actual production costs and standard costs
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget to make sure that standard cost for all products are calculated in line with budget consideration
  • Assist with internal & external audits
  • Work with the inventory manager, material planning manager and other personnel to analyze and update inventory standard costs
  • Maintain monthly product cost reports (by Finished Goods (FG) item number) - actual to standard
  • Complete Ad-Hoc reporting and projects as assigned and assist with other duties as required
  • Maintain accurate job aids (work instructions) for all duties assigned
  • Maintain Landed Standard Cost in SFDC


Position requirements:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5-10 years' experience in manufacturing cost accounting; and
  • Experience and understanding of standard cost in a manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or equivalent
  • CPA designation an asset
  • Highly proficient in Oracle ERP - working knowledge of information flow through and data mining
  • Highly proficient in excel - familiarity with formulas and functions to perform complex data analysis
  • Exposure to Oracle ERP, and/or implementing an ERP is considered an Asset
  • Advance understanding of accounting concepts. Being able to analyze transactions and the impact it has on the business.
  • Advance understanding of allowance this will be gained through both on the job training and in class training from a technical institution
  • Advance understanding of the budgeting process, having a big picture outlook and being able to interpret the numbers presented and form accurate interpretation of the results
  • Adept at financial monitoring & analysis, decision making
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
