Description

The Corrections Sergeant maintains the safety and security of inmates and staff at the Williams County Correctional Center. This position acts as the shift commander on the assigned shift.
Examples of Duties
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position.   • Supervises Corrections Deputies as they perform their job duties; verifies duties are completed correctly
  • Participates in the day-to-day activities of Corrections Deputies or provides assistance when needed
  • Maintains the safety and security of the staff, inmates, and corrections facility; monitors behavior of inmates and promotes acceptable attitude and conduct
  • Maintains custody and control of inmates according to policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Supervises inmate activities and maintains discipline; may physically restrain uncooperative or disruptive inmates and take steps to avert fights, assaults, riots, and escapes
  • Oversees provision of care for inmates; administers and dispenses medications, schedules appointments, arranges transports and/or provides transportation for visits and appointments outside of the facility
  • Updates and maintains a variety of files, records, event logs, charts, and other documents; distributes appropriate records and prepares reports as required
  • Testifies as a credible witness in various court proceedings
  • Assists the Sheriff's Office staff, county departments, and federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies as needed
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, and high ethical standard of the Sheriff's Office by ensuring that all applicable rules and regulations are followed
  • Maintains the confidentiality of non-public records and makes all information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code available.

Typical Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) years of experience as a corrections officer
  • ND Corrections Officer Basic Certification, or the ability to become certified within one year of start date
  • Technical certifications in CPR, First Aid, and specialized tactics and equipment
  • Must pass a thorough background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver's License
  • Must be able to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift

Supplemental Information
Special Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a correctional facility environment that involves constant awareness and concentration of surrounding activities. Work occasionally involves personal danger and potential exposure to hazardous situations; the physical ability to subdue hostile individuals is required.

Benefits and Compensation Start pay for this position is $47.75/hour to $49.00 depending on experience and training. Williams County provides generous benefits to full-time regular employees: paid sick and vacation leave, a fully paid health/dental/vision benefit plan for employees and dependents, term life insurance of $25,000, and 100% contribution toward retirement benefits through the ND Public Employees Retirement System.

Williams County pays the full premium for family, single-plus-dependent or single coverage plan for each full-time employee.

Williams County provides a monthly allowance toward the purchase of a voluntary supplemental insurance policy for each full-time employee. Coverage may include single, single-plus-dependent or family coverage on any voluntary supplemental insurance provided by the designated Williams County supplemental insurance provider.

Williams County pays the premium for a $25,000 term life insurance policy and $25,000 accidental death and dismemberment policy for full-time employees.

Williams County pays the premium for a Long Term Disability Insurance plan for full-time employees.

Employees who are at least 18 years of age and are working in a qualified position an average of 20 hours per week for five or more months of the year are required to participate in the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (ND PERS) Retirement Plan. Membership will become effective immediately upon employment.
