Description
The Corrections Lieutenant coordinates, directs, and evaluates daily staff operations of the Williams County Correctional Center. The Corrections Lieutenant acts as Jail Commander in the absence of the Corrections Captain.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position.   • Directs operations to ensure the safety, security, and smooth functioning of the Williams County Correctional Center
  • Manages corrections staff; delegates assignments, monitors work, and evaluates performance
  • Meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues
  • Oversees shifts to ensure that staff is adequately trained, equipped, and prepared
  • Works all shifts regularly to monitor staff performance, conduct, and work techniques
  • Conducts regular staff briefings; assures effective communication of Williams County Correctional Center issues and goals
  • Reviews reports and paperwork submitted by staff, ensuring timely and accurate completion
  • Plans and generates monthly work schedules
  • Performs department timekeeping duties, including approving time off, reviewing timesheets for accuracy, solving discrepancies, and approving timesheets
  • Conducts daily audits on recent bookings in Zuercher; corrects mistakes or generates a task for the individual responsible for the correction
  • Analyzes operating systems and procedures, recommends improvements, and implements authorized changes
  • Manages critical incidents as needed; responds to the incident and takes command when appropriate; documents incidents and confirms the proper resolution
  • Provides direction and oversight to programs and operations including, but not limited to; food service, inmate transportation, vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • Maintains effective communication with Corrections Captain
  • Inspects the facility for compliance with standards, including proper maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security; makes recommendations for improvements as needed
  • Acts as Jail Commander in the absence of the Corrections Captain
  • Assists staff in day-to-day operations by performing Corrections Officer duties as needed
  • Coordinates with the Corrections Captain to create and implement a plan to achieve and maintain compliance with changes to the jail standards made by the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
  • Ensures that all staff comply with and have a working knowledge of county and state laws applying to the Williams County Correction Center and the rules and regulations set forth by the Corrections Captain and/or Sheriff
  • Assists the Sheriff's Office staff, county departments, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies as needed
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, and high ethical standard of the Sheriff's Office by ensuring that all applicable rules and regulations are followed
  • Maintains the confidentiality of non-public records and makes all information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code available.


Typical Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND four (4) years' corrections experience, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must pass a thorough background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver's License
  • Must be able to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift


Supplemental Information
Special Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a correctional facility environment that involves constant awareness and concentration of surrounding activities. Work occasionally involves personal danger and potential exposure to hazardous situations; the physical ability to subdue hostile individuals is required.


Compensation and Benefits: Pay ranges from $55/hour to $58/hour depending on training and experience. Williams County Offers a Generous Benefit Package, including Paid sick and vacation 12 paid holidays per year, fully paid health, dental and vision insurance for single, single + dependent, or family contracts, term life insurance, long term disability insurance, fully funded retirement benefits through the North Dakota Public employee's retirement system.

Williams County pays the full premium for family, single-plus-dependent or single coverage plan for each full-time employee.

Williams County provides a monthly allowance toward the purchase of a voluntary supplemental insurance policy for each full-time employee. Coverage may include single, single-plus-dependent or family coverage on any voluntary supplemental insurance provided by the designated Williams County supplemental insurance provider.

Williams County pays the premium for a $25,000 term life insurance policy and $25,000 accidental death and dismemberment policy for full-time employees.

Williams County pays the premium for a Long Term Disability Insurance plan for full-time employees.

Employees who are at least 18 years of age and are working in a qualified position an average of 20 hours per week for five or more months of the year are required to participate in the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (ND PERS) Retirement Plan. Membership will become effective immediately upon employment.
