Basic Purpose:

Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities for performing professional teaching work at the elementary or secondary level in a correctional institution or facility; applies special methods and techniques in the habilitation of inmates.

Typical Functions:
  • Conducts classes in core, academic areas to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Plans and lays out courses of study for subjects taught; gives instructions; has a specific field or grade level; prepares and administers examinations; prepares various administrative reports.
  • Devises and uses special instructional materials or teaching aids for subjects taught in core, academic areas; gives individual instructions, encouragement, counseling and guidance to students as necessary.
  • Maintains classroom and corridor discipline; advises and assists in planning and supervising class and student club activities; prepares and grades examination papers; prepares reports on attendance, progress and capabilities of each pupil for administrative purposes.
  • Attends teachers meetings and participates in the planning, scheduling and development of the school program.
  • Maintains inventory of books and supplies.
  • Participates in staff and facility head meetings; staff development training sessions; attends staffing's to provide input on students' progress.
  • Supervises the Correctional Teacher I at assigned facility location.
  • Coordinates with the facility heads.
  • Manages all aspects of the education system at the facility level; conducts data reporting, test administration and enrollment.
  • Supervises and manages college, education and programs' classes.


Level Descriptor:

This is the leadership level where incumbents are responsible for performing advanced level educational work that is complex and difficult. Responsibilities also include functioning as a lead worker with limited supervisory duties. There is only one position at each institution or facility at this level.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

Knowledge of modern principles, practices and materials in the specialized field of education; of school administration principles and practices; of the content matter in the area of instruction; of accepted methods of teaching incarcerated students; and of evaluating critically and objectively the educational needs and achievements of the students.

Required Abilities: Ability is required to supervise staff and instruct incarcerated students; to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others; to organize and present facts and opinions clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to maintain discipline in the facility education unit. Ability to develop and present a curriculum.

Education and Experience:

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master's degree in education and possession of a current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.

Special Requirements:

Travel is required, must possess a valid driver's license.
