JOB TITLE: Corporate Attorney - Insurance & Brokerage Services

DEPARTMENT: Legal

JOB SUMMARY:

We are seeking an experienced and business-oriented Corporate Attorney to support a large, diversified brokerage organization offering retail brokerage, wholesale brokerage, underwriting, and claims services, reporting directly to the General Counsel. This role provides legal guidance across all business units, with a strong emphasis on litigation management, insurance defense, and claims-related matters. The ideal candidate combines transactional expertise with practical litigation experience and the ability to partner closely with internal stakeholders and outside counsel.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Legal Judgment & Risk Advisory: Identifies legal exposure early and provides clear, actionable guidance that enables business leaders to make informed decisions. Balances legal risk with commercial practicality without requiring escalation for routine matters.

Litigation Management: Manages complex litigation portfolios with a hands-on approach. Develops case strategy, directs outside counsel effectively, controls legal spend, and drives matters toward favorable resolution. Keeps leadership informed without burying them in detail.

Contract Drafting & Negotiation: Produces precise, well-structured agreements across a range of transaction types. Negotiates firmly but pragmatically, protecting the organization's interests while preserving business relationships. Works efficiently without sacrificing accuracy.

Regulatory Knowledge: Maintains current working knowledge of insurance regulatory frameworks across multiple states. Proactively monitors legislative and regulatory developments and translates their impact into practical guidance for the business.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Builds trusted partnerships with compliance, risk, operations, and executive leadership. Communicates complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to non-legal audiences. Earns credibility as a business partner, not just a gatekeeper.

Priority Management & Operational Agility: Manages a high-volume, multi-division workload without sacrificing quality or responsiveness. Self-directs effectively in a lean legal department structure. Escalates appropriately and operates with a sense of urgency when matters demand it.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide legal support across retail brokerage, wholesale brokerage, underwriting, and claims operations.
  • Manage and oversee litigation matters, including insurance defense and claims-related disputes.
  • Supervise and coordinate with outside counsel, ensuring effective case strategy, cost control, and alignment with business objectives.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of commercial insurance-related and non-insurance-related agreements, including insurance administrative services agreements, brokerage agreements, claims services agreements, employment agreements, and general corporate services and other business agreements.
  • Advise internal business units on legal risk, regulatory compliance, and operational matters.
  • Assist with dispute resolution, including arbitration, pre-litigation strategy, mediation, and settlement negotiations.
  • Monitor developments in insurance law and regulations and advise leadership on potential impacts.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with compliance, risk, and executive teams on corporate initiatives.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably in insurance, brokerage, claims, or financial services
  • Strong background in litigation, with a focus on insurance defense and claims services

  • Active bar membership in good standing (California Bar membership preferred but not required)
  • In-house legal experience within an insurance company, brokerage, claims, or related financial services organization preferred
  • Experience supporting multi-state regulatory and operational compliance preferred
