As a Systems Engineer, you'll design, integrate, and optimize complex systems that drive the semiconductor industry forward. Your expertise in systems thinking and problem-solving is essential as you collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop advanced solutions to intricate processes and writing system specifications. You'll be responsible for analyzing requirements, defining system architectures, conducting thorough testing, and ensuring seamless integration of subsystems. Additionally, you'll identify and mitigate risks, confirming that our systems meet the highest quality standards and exceed customer expectations.
Role Responsibilities:
Controls & Systems Engineer (Linux / EPICS / DCS/SCADA Focus)
Applied Materials has an immediate need for an Engineer focused on advanced controls, Linux system administration, and distributed control systems supporting complex instrumentation platforms. This role emphasizes EPICS integration, scalable infrastructure, and modern DCS/SCADA architectures. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, deployment, maintenance, and support of advanced instrumentation and control platforms, working closely with engineering, IT, and scientific teams.
The Ideal Candidate will:
• Gather and document system requirements and maintain version-controlled designs
• Administer Linux-based control environments (servers, IOCs, containers)
• Lead development and deployment of EPICS or DCS/SCADA systems
• Design and integrate distributed control architectures • Develop EPICS IOCs and operator interfaces (Phoebus, CSS)
• Implement automation using tools such as Ansible • Monitor system performance, reliability, and cybersecurity
• Establish documentation, standards, and training materials
• Perform system validation, testing, and troubleshooting • Support virtualization and container-based deployments
Required Skills:
• Strong Linux system administration experience
• Experience with EPICS or similar DCS/SCADA frameworks
• Experience with automation tools (Ansible, scripting)
• Knowledge of networking and distributed systems
• Proficiency in Python or Bash
• Experience with Git/version control
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills Preferred Skills:
• EPICS IOC development and StreamDevice
• Phoebus or CSS UI development
• Virtualization/container platforms (Proxmox, VMware, Docker, Kubernetes) Real-time or near-real-time systems experience
• Hardware interface integration
• Cybersecurity practices for control systems
• Scientific or industrial instrumentation experience
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field (or equivalent experience).

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
