Full Job Description
Your role
This role reports directly to the Controls department lead at our Atlas Copco-Grayling, MI facility. As a Controls Engineer, you'll be responsible for designing, programming, and implementing control systems for automated feeding equipment. You'll work closely with mechanical engineers, project managers, and clients to deliver high-performance automation solutions that meet their exacting standards.

Here's how you'll make an impact:
  • Design and develop control systems for automated feeding equipment, including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and actuators
  • Program and debug PLCs and HMIs for custom automation solutions, specifically Allen Bradley and Siemens.
  • Create electrical schematics and panel layouts using CAD software, specifically using AutoCAD and EPLAN.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and software teams to integrate controls with mechanical systems
  • Conduct system testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning in-house and at customer sites potentially
  • Develop and maintain documentation including wiring diagrams, control logic, and user manuals
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and industry regulations (e.g., NFPA 79, UL508A)
  • Provide technical support and training to customers and internal teams
  • Schedule: Due to current workload, work schedule expectations are Monday through Friday (some Saturdays) - up to 50 hours per week. This is subject to change at any time and at manager discretion.
To succeed, you will need
  • Education and Certification Requirements: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, or related field or equivalent work experience in the field of electrical engineering
  • Prior Work Experience: 3+ years of experience in controls engineering, preferably in automation or feeding systems. Experience with motion control and servo systems is a plus
  • Computer Skills: Strong computer skills using Microsoft office suite products and AutoCAD and EPLAN software. Proficiency in PLC programming and HMI development for Allen Bradley and Siemens products
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of industrial automation components (sensors, motors, drives, etc.)
  • Safety: Demonstrates a strong commitment to all safety protocols, OSHA industry standards, proper equipment use, safe operation of tools and machinery, and consistent use of required protective gear.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: strong communication skills, ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Travel Requirements:travel may be required (10-20%)
  • Physical requirements: Meeting the physical demands of the job, including lifting up to 50 pounds and engaging in activities such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, and installing tooling throughout the entire shift.
