Job DescriptionOverviewThe Controls Engineer supports process controls, automation, data connectivity, and vision inspection systems for the Franklin, IN plant, with particular emphasis on the setup, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the vision inspection systems used on the production floor. The role also includes the design, deployment, and maintenance of PLC and SCADA/Ignition systems, and plays a key part in advancing the plant's digital and continuous improvement initiatives. The Controls Engineer reports to the Engineering and Maintenance Manager.
Location: Franklin, IN
Responsibilities- Design, test, deploy, and upgrade process data acquisition, automation, and control systems that fit the needs of the plant, including the creation of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic drawings as needed
- Determine and test availability and quality of data points on company assets (PLCs, industrial computers, etc.)
- Develop and document communication routes for plant assets
- Utilizing Inductive Automation's Ignition, build solutions that incorporate both the back-end system (tags, history, databases) and front-end visualizations (Perspective) for use on the plant floor
- Program PLCs to implement automation or data collection solutions using IEC 61131-3 languages
- Work with OEMs and vendors on equipment data mapping, controls upgrades, and connectivity
- Manage plant controls integration projects, including timelines and internal/external resource utilization
- Apply and maintain safe work practices for electrical and equipment work, including compliance with applicable national/state electrical codes
- Own setup, configuration, and performance improvement of plant vision inspection systems, including cameras, lighting, optics, recipes, and inspection parameters
- Support troubleshooting and training for production, quality, and maintenance personnel on vision system operation and changeover
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or another similar technical degree
- Knowledge of discrete manufacturing processes (especially plastics)
- Experience with SCADA/MES and data historian platforms (Ignition, Wonderware/AVEVA, FactoryTalk)
- Ability to create designs in mechanical and electrical CAD software (AutoCAD, EPLAN, SolidWorks, etc.)
- Working knowledge of industrial/facilities communications protocols (OPC UA, Modbus, BACnet, etc.)
- Experience developing/programming HMI screens or other real-time visualizations
- Working knowledge of various PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
- Experience implementing, maintaining, or troubleshooting machine vision/inspection systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Omron)
- Experience programming PLCs (ladder logic, structured text, function block, etc.)
- Experience with SQL databases (Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or others)
- Industrial networking knowledge
- Certification in Inductive Automation's Ignition is a plus
