Controller Job DescriptionThe Controller is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and execution of the company's accounting and finance functions. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines department management with active participation in daily accounting operations, financial reporting, and process improvement.
This is a highly engaged, hands-on leadership position best suited for someone who enjoys remaining actively involved in the accounting work while leading and developing a team. The Controller works closely with accounting staff to ensure accurate financial records, timely reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with local, federal, and state law . Rather than operating solely in a strategic or oversight capacity, the Controller is expected to be actively involved in month-end close activities, financial analysis, cash management, budget administration, and the review of accounting transactions across the organization. They serve as a working leader who coaches, develops, and supports the accounting team while maintaining direct involvement in the department's core responsibilities.
Controller Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAccounting Operations & Financial Reporting
- Direct and participate in the daily operations of multi-entity Accounting and Finance Department.
- Review accounting activity and financial results across more than 60 client locations to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Actively support and participate in month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations, journal entry review, and financial statement preparation.
- Review balance sheet accounts and provide guidance on adjusting entries and corrective actions as needed.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and accounting records.
- Prepare, review, and distribute periodic financial statements, management reports, and operational metrics.
- Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with local, federal, and state law and company standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulations, and company policies.
- Maintain an effective system of internal controls designed to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
Cash Management & Financial Oversight
- Monitor daily cash activity, account balances, and cash flow forecasts.
- Coordinates and compiles budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities across the organization.
- Develop and track key financial and operating performance metrics.
- Identify financial risks, accounting issues, and operational inefficiencies and recommend practical solutions.
- Manages general liability insurance including audits, tracking insurance expenses, and ensuring proper cost allocation.
Team Leadership & Development
- Directly supervise and support the Accounts Payable, Cash Application, Accounts Receivable, Senior Accountant, and Staff Accountant functions.
- Provide hands-on coaching, training, and day-to-day guidance to the team.
- Establish clear expectations, monitor performance, and promote accountability.
- Serve as a resource for the team by assisting with complex transactions, reconciliations, and problem resolution.
- Foster a collaborative, service-oriented department that supports operational and client needs.
Controller Job Qualifications- Bachelor Degree in Accounting
- Minimum of ten years in the Accounting field with leadership experience
- Established experience in managing the accounting and finance function in accordance to GAAP and internal operating standards.
- Established experience in producing, analyzing, and reporting to senior management and/or ownership the corporate financial statements: income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement.
- Established experience in Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Excel and financial software system (e.g., Peachtree, Quickbooks, Microsoft Dynamics Great PlainsBusiness Central, etc.).
- Excellent verbal (including formal presentations), written communications and comprehension skills
Qualifications Desired- Master's in Business or related field
- Experience using Dynamics Great Plains and Business Central
- Experience using Paycom payroll systems
- Background in the parking or related property management industry
- Prior experience in controllership
- Prior experience in leading Payroll department
