CONTROLLER - Fulltime

POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller assists the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in performing multiple duties related to the accounting functions of the Witte Museum. The Controller is a senior financial executive responsible for managing the organization's accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and providing strategic financial guidance. The Controller oversees all aspects of the company's financial activities. The role requires a deep understanding of accounting principles, financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting. Additional requirements include meeting recurring demanding deadlines and facilitating collaborative and cooperative working relationships.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepares and publishes timely monthly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy with GAAP standards
  • Develops budgets, financial projections, and forecasts, analyzing variances to support strategic decision making
  • Implements and monitors internal controls to safeguard assets, mitigate risk, and ensure compliance with financial regulations
  • Supervises and mentors finance staff, fostering professional development and ensuring effective performance management
  • Assists in managing the museum's cash position
  • Reviews and approves bank reconciliations for multiple bank accounts
  • Works closely with the COO and the accounting/finance team, and each department to prepare, record, and monitor the Operating Budget
  • Records, recognizes and reconciles deferred revenue
  • Prepares and maintains pledge schedules with supporting documentation, and other schedules as needed
  • Updates and maintains fixed assets schedule
  • Leads and coordinates annual audits, liaising with external auditors and finance committees
  • Assists with preparation for the annual Form 990s
  • Assists in maintaining internal controls, policies and procedures, and current state and federal requirements related to non-profit accounting
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by the COO and CEO & President

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree (BA, BS) in accounting, finance, or business administration; CPA certification preferred
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge and Altru a plus

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • Excellent planning, organizational, research, and time management skills
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, attention to detail, proficiency in accounting software and EXCEL and knowledge of regulatory requirements
  • Experience with Fund Accounting for non-profit organizations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to guide teams, communicate financial insights to senior management, and influence strategic decisions
  • Experience in preparing supporting schedules and account reconciliations on balance sheet and income statement line items
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Required: 7-10 years relevant experience in non-profit accounting or finance, with leadership experience in managing teams

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be in good physical condition
  • Must be able to lift and move moderately heavy objects (up to 30lbs)
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, climb stairs, sit and stand for extended periods
  • Must have the manual dexterity to frequently use hands and fingers to operate office equipment, keyboards, and other job-related tools
  • Works primarily in a traditional office environment with occasional outdoor work required
  • Works primarily Monday through Friday, but must be able to maintain a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
