Full Job Description
The Controller directs the financial affairs of the organization and establishes its financial plans, policies, and accounting practices. This role is responsible for maintaining fiscal records, managing relationships with lending institutions and the financial community, and preparing comprehensive financial analyses and reports, including interim and year-end financial statements with supporting schedules to guide management. The Controller provides direct supervision over general accounting, cost accounting, budgetary controls, and the overall management of the accounting department.

CPA is preferred but not required

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting
  • Analyze & Interpret: Develop and interpret accounting data to evaluate operating results in terms of profitability, budget performance, and overall financial soundness; deliver comprehensive monthly management reports.
  • Fiscal Records: Maintain the company's system of accounts and review all books and records tracking corporate transactions and assets.
  • Internal Controls: Establish and maintain effective internal financial controls, ensuring an appropriate segregation of duties and an equitable distribution of workload across the department.
  • Month-End Closing: Prepare and execute manual month-end closing entries (20+ entries) and continually refine management reports for maximum utility and efficiency.
  • Tax & Audit Compliance: Partner with external tax accountants and auditors to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local corporate, payroll, and applicable tax laws.

Operations & Project Support (Sage 100)
  • Project Analysis: Partner with the Operations Department to assist project teams with financial inquiries, including accounts receivable (A/R) updates, cost forecasting, budgeting, and committed cost management.
  • Billing & Accounts Receivable: Conduct final reviews and sign-offs on all project billings; review A/R weekly with an emphasis on past-due accounts, and collaborate with Operations to ensure project teams follow up timely.
  • System Administration: Serve as the primary point of contact for Sage Support to troubleshoot processing issues; collaborate with Operations on any design or process updates to Sage templates (purchase orders, change orders, invoices, progress billings, etc.).
  • Risk & Risk Management: Track lien notices and subcontractor payment issues to alert Operations; act as the primary contact for the insurance company to review claims/coverages, and manage the monthly builders risk tracking form.

Leadership & Collaboration
  • Team Development: Direct, supervise, and mentor accounting staff; conduct performance evaluations, recommend training, and manage daily interactions, scheduling, and time-off approvals.
  • Executive Advisory: Update the Executive Team on legal matters, billing bottlenecks, and financial risks; participate in monthly Leadership Meetings to brief all departments on accounting objectives.
  • HR & Payroll Support: Assist with HR functions, including the annual review and comparative analysis of employee benefits (medical, dental, vision, STD/LTD, 401k). Maintain a thorough understanding of payroll procedures to process payroll as a backup when HR is unavailable.
  • General Oversight: Review check packages from a liability perspective and sign on the owner's behalf when necessary; administer work orders and residential projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with team members, executives, and external partners at all levels.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced computer skills, including deep proficiency with MS Excel, Word, Adobe, and Sage 100. Ability to quickly master trade-specific applications (e.g., ShareFile).

Education & Experience
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Finance or Accounting required; Master's degree preferred; CPA designation is a significant plus.
  • Experience: 8+ years of progressive experience in a Finance & Accounting career.
  • Leadership History: Prior successful experience as a Controller (or higher) with direct responsibility for leading teams and advising executive management.
