Location: Norwalk, CT

The Opportunity

As a Controller, you will play a key leadership role in overseeing the financial health and integrity of the credit union. You'll lead the Accounting team, ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, and support strategic decision-making through financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting, and asset liability management.

This role blends financial leadership, analytical problem solving, and operational oversight. You'll collaborate closely with senior leadership, auditors, regulators, and departments across the organization to ensure compliance, drive financial performance, and support the credit union's long-term success. Major Responsibilities

Asset Liability Management (ALM), Financial Analysis, & Forecasting
  • Serve as the ALM specialist running computer simulation models, updating historical records, providing forecasts, and analyzing data. Creates the monthly ALCO package for review by the committee and the Board of Directors in a timely fashion. Present the package at monthly ALCO meetings to Senior Management. Research NCUA regulatory changes and update and suggest implementation accordingly. Aid in the creation of the annual ALM plan. Prepare financial projections and evaluations, including peer analysis and reporting.
  • In conjunction with the CFO, develop the financial modeling for the strategic plan. Create reports for board presentation and assist in the presentation of the plan.
  • Maintain the profitability software model for the credit union. In conjunction with the CFO, review and revise profitability assumptions based upon current and future events. Create reports for senior management and the Board at both an organizational and product level detailing profitability accordingly. Assist in the analysis of the annual redistribution of the membership to the appropriate branch/location.
  • Develop reporting for additional financial risks to the credit union, including liquidity, and credit risks. Ensure the credit union remains within established policy guidelines for liquidity. Review the various loan portfolios for negative trends in delinquency and collections.
  • Under the guidance of the CFO, review and analyze the Allowance for Loan Loss (ALLL) calculations to ensure accurate reporting.

Department Leadership & Staff Management
  • Manage and oversee the activities of the Accounting & Finance Department, including assigning work, monitoring performance, developing staff, and ensuring the timely and accurate completion of accounting functions. Make recommendations regarding personnel actions and support employee growth and development. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and high-quality service to internal and external stakeholders in alignment with Credit Union objectives.

Cash Management & Investments
  • Monitor the daily cash flows of the credit union to ensure all correspondent accounts are properly funded. Make transfers as needed to fund these accounts.
  • Monitor the Credit Union's investment portfolio and cash flow needs, providing recommendations to the CFO regarding investment opportunities. Ensure investment transactions are accurately recorded, maintain appropriate settlement and safekeeping controls, monitor interest collections, and assist with investment credit analysis and regulatory compliance.

Audit, Regulatory Compliance, Reporting, & Accounting Operations
  • Coordinate external and internal audits - Financial and Regulatory audits (NCUA, FHLB etc).
  • Comply with the Federal Reserve Bank's reserve balance requirements. Ensure the accuracy and legal compliance of all scheduled Federal reporting requirements.
  • Act as the liaison for Accounting for the development and maintenance of the General Ledger system within the Advances Reporting for Credit Unions (ARCU) database. Ensure the accurate loading of general ledger data into the ARCU system. Work with senior management and accounting staff to develop accurate, standardized reports for proper distribution.
  • Act as primary backup for the creation of the 5300-call report to the NCUA on a quarterly basis.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed assets.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.

Budgeting, Controls, & Performance Management
  • Recommend changes in financial controls, policies, and programs as are necessary to preserve and increase Credit Union assets.
  • Analyze profitability, trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs) providing reports and records as requested.
  • In conjunction with the CFO, develop the annual budget for the Credit Union. Work with department heads to help establish cost center budgets and develop reports to help manage their budgets. Monitor financial performance against budget.
  • Identify opportunities to improve earnings and efficiency.
  • Assist CFO and staff with developing and maintaining internal controls.
  • Support long-term business planning and growth initiatives.

Position Requirements
  1. A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field.
  2. 7-10 years' experience working in a financial institution at a management position overseeing accounting and finance related activities.
  3. Expertise in the areas of asset liability management, cash management, reconciliation, audits and tax reporting.
  4. Ability to effectively manage complex projects and meet deadlines.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Strong analytical skills, including demonstrated experience identifying and quantifying problems and providing effective resolutions.
  7. Ability to work independently.
  8. Strong attention to detail.
  9. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws/regulatory requirements as related to functional areas.
  10. Excellent PC skills, MS Office products, financial software, (Core, ALM, profitability, etc.) and Report Writer capabilities.

Physical and Mental Abilities:
