We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations. This is a key leadership position responsible for maintaining accurate financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, managing cash flow, and providing management with the financial information needed to make sound business decisions.
Position Summary
The Controller will oversee the company's accounting and financial functions, including general ledger accounting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, job costing, financial reporting, budgeting, cash-flow management, and month-end and year-end close processes.
The ideal candidate understands the financial complexities of construction and heavy/site-development operations and is comfortable working closely with company leadership, project managers, estimators, and administrative staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the day-to-day accounting operations of the company.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reports.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, collections, and cash receipts.
- Manage company cash flow, banking relationships, and cash forecasting.
- Oversee payroll accounting and ensure accurate recording of labor costs.
- Maintain and improve construction job-cost accounting and reporting.
- Monitor job profitability, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project costs.
- Work with project managers and management to analyze job performance and identify cost overruns or margin opportunities.
- Review work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project revenue recognition.
- Establish and maintain strong internal accounting controls and procedures.
- Coordinate annual financial statements, tax filings, audits, and other outside accounting requirements.
- Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Monitor equipment, fixed assets, debt, insurance, and other significant company expenditures.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles, tax requirements, and company policies.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and technology.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to company ownership and senior management.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and administrative personnel as appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of sensitive financial and employee information.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with Controller or senior accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Construction industry accounting experience required or highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, construction billing, and project profitability.
- Experience with construction accounting software systems.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
- Experience managing or supervising accounting personnel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both office and field personnel.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to balance strategic financial oversight with hands-on involvement in daily accounting operations.
- Experience working with construction lenders, sureties, CPAs, auditors, and insurance providers is a plus.
