About the PositionThe Controller is responsible for leading accounting operations for the Downtown Denver Partnership and its affiliated entities, ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective grants management, timely monthly close processes, and successful annual audits. Reporting to the CFO, this role plays a critical part in maintaining strong financial practices and improving systems, processes, and controls across the organization.
In addition to overseeing a two-person accounting team, the Controller partners with leadership on budgeting, cash management, and financial planning initiatives that support the long-term success of the organization.
About the Job- Lead the monthly and year-end close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting through oversight of journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and general ledger activities.
- Review accounting transactions to ensure accuracy, proper accounting treatment, and compliance with organizational policies and accounting standards.
- Prepare and analyze financial reports related to accounts receivable, collections, accrued revenue, and other key metrics, and partner with the CFO to develop quarterly and Board-level reporting packages.
- Oversee grants accounting and compliance processes, helping to strengthen operational efficiencies and support the effective management of government grants and other funding sources.
- Monitor and manage organizational cash flow, including cash forecasting, fund transfers, and financial reporting support for program and departmental leaders.
- Lead the annual audit process, coordinating the preparation of financial records and serving as the primary liaison for external auditors and tax return preparers.
- Partner with the CFO on annual budgeting, forecasting, reserve tracking, and financial planning activities across multiple entities.
- Support the development and continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and safeguard organizational assets.
- Serve as the administrator for Microsoft Business Central, Salesforce, and banking and credit card platforms, supporting system effectiveness and financial operations.
- Review and reconcile key balance sheet and operational accounts, including accounts receivable aging, deferred revenue schedules, and credit card activity.
- Depending on experience, provide oversight and strategic guidance for Salesforce administration, reporting, and system planning initiatives that support business and accounting needs.
About YouYou are a hands-on accounting leader with experience in nonprofit and/or government accounting who enjoys building strong financial processes, supporting organizational strategy, and developing high-performing teams. You bring a balance of technical accounting expertise, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
What You'll Bring:- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred
- 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including nonprofit and/or government fund accounting
- Previous people management experience
- Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting and net asset classifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
- Microsoft Business Central experience preferred
- Salesforce experience preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Strong business acumen and ability to support strategic decision-making
- Solid project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and improve processes
