Full Job Description
Location: Remote, with onsite presence as needed based on client requirements; candidates in the New York Metro area preferred, but other locations considered

Compensation: $155,000-$200,000, commensurate with experience

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Controller to manage the day-to-day financial operations of Carey & Co and support the financial operations of our nonprofit clients. This role is central to our finance function, overseeing accounting processes, reconciliations, and reporting, while directly managing a team of offshore bookkeepers based in the Philippines. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable managing remote and international staff, and ready to grow into greater financial leadership responsibility as the organization scales.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accounting Operations: Oversee day-to-day bookkeeping, accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • International Team Management: Directly manage, train, and review the work of bookkeepers based in the Philippines, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and timeliness across time zones.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for internal leadership and client review.
  • Process & Controls: Develop and refine accounting procedures and internal controls to ensure accuracy and support scalable growth.
  • Compliance Support: Support adherence to GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards; assist with audit and tax preparation as needed.
  • Client & Team Support: Serve as a point of escalation for accounting questions from clients and internal staff, and support interim CFOs and leadership with financial data and analysis.
  • Systems Management: Maintain and optimize the use of QuickBooks Online and related tools across client engagements.

Requirements
  • 8-10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience; nonprofit, consulting, or professional services experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience managing or supervising remote and/or international staff (Philippines-based teams a strong plus).
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting and GAAP standards.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel; familiarity with additional ERP systems a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort operating independently in a fully remote, multi-time-zone environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
