We are seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead our accounting and financial reporting functions. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, ensuring the integrity of financial information, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting organizational growth through financial analysis and operational excellence.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can balance strategic thinking with day-to-day financial management. This individual will partner closely with executive leadership to provide financial insights, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive continuous improvement across finance processes.
This is a full-time, exempt position based in Davis, CA, reporting to the Chief Operations Officer with 4-5 direct reports. The role requires in-office presence at least four days per week. No regular travel is required.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to leadership.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective internal controls and accounting policies.
- Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements.
- Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Partner with leadership to develop annual budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor budget performance and identify variances.
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to support strategic decision-making.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team through clear expectations, regular feedback, thoughtful delegation, and consistent accountability.
- Address performance concerns promptly, candidly, and fairly.
- Build an effective team through hiring, onboarding, cross-training, professional development, and succession planning.
- Create an environment where employees can raise concerns, acknowledge mistakes, challenge assumptions respectfully, and improve how work gets done.
Process Improvement
- Evaluate and improve accounting systems, workflows, and reporting processes.
- Leverage technology to enhance efficiency and data accuracy.
- Support system implementations and financial process automation initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Demonstrated success managing and developing accounting staff, including setting expectations, giving candid feedback, addressing underperformance, and retaining strong performers.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Experience with a privately held, subscription, membership, online-services, or similarly structured organization.
- Experience leading accounting teams through process or systems changes.

Salary and Benefits
The expected base salary range for this position is $130,000 to $160,000 annually. The actual offer will reflect the candidate's relevant experience, qualifications, and demonstrated capabilities.
