Job Summary

The Advanced Sources and Detector (ASD) Project is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of an ~ 20 MeV linear induction electron accelerator, through the coordination of efforts at Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Nicknamed Scorpius, the machine will be used to diagnose subcritical experiments at the NNSS, within an underground complex (U1a; 963 feet below grade) in support of the Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments Program. LANL is seeking a motivated individual with a background in science, engineering, or project management to become a Control Account Manager (CAM). In this role, you will manage cost, schedule, and technical performance for key parts of a major project supporting stockpile stewardship program. As a CAM, you will lead a cross-functional team to achieve project goals while ensuring safety, meeting requirements, and staying within budget and schedule.

This is a hybrid role. The position will be located onsite at Los Alamos National Lab on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and can work from home on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • The CAM is responsible for leading a cross-functional team, which includes members with diverse skills and expertise from different departments or specialties. The main goal is to ensure that the team works cohesively to achieve the project objectives.
  • Responsible for planning, budgeting, managing and controlling costs and schedule performance for a project or sub-project and serve as a point of contact for project controls, including account scope, schedule, budget and technical performance.
  • Leads efforts to ensure work packages realistically represent the duration and budget necessary to perform work and perform variance analysis reviews, determine cause and effect of schedule or cost variance and define achievable corrective action plans.
  • Expected to present project management performance plans, status updates, trends, or issues to federal sponsors.
  • Manage Control Accounts within large 413.B projects that may involve complex and technically challenging scopes of work.
  • Reviews and presents as required project progress reports, develops forecasts and oversees appropriate corrective action(s) when necessary.
  • Subject matter expertise and proven experience with project controls and/or project management, project budgets including cost estimating, cost control and cost analysis, project scheduling, implementation of corrective actions, developing and delivering detailed and accurate status reports and subject matter expertise and proven experience with engineering functions and principles required to understand and successfully implement and monitor technical projects.
  • Expert level knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) tools and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of project management principles.
  • Knowledge of all phases of construction operations relating to engineering, procurement and project-related activities. Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of project management tools and techniques relating to all project activities.
  • Responsible for managing, coordinating and administering major projects that may involve several Laboratory organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction, engineering and procurement, and other project related activities, including their interfaces and interdependence. Broad knowledge of industry standards.
  • Ability to manage large projects and to take corrective action, monitor work, manage conflict, and coordinate the activities of others, including joint ventures, alliances and consortium.

Required Skills/ Abilities

  • 5 years of experience in project management, with a focus on managing complex and technically challenging projects.
  • Proficient knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) tools and solid understanding of advanced project management principles.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, budgeting, cost control, scheduling, and variance analysis.
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and managing large projects to successful completion.
  • Experience in preparing and presenting detailed project reports and updates to stakeholders, including federal sponsors.
  • Good understanding of construction, engineering, procurement, and industry standards.
  • Previous project management experience and responsibilities should include:
  • Managing large projects ($10M+ TPC) and project teams (20+ people) through representative project lifecycle phases.
  • Defining, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and successfully completing discrete elements of scope in compliance with defined schedule, costs, risk, and quality constraints.
  • Maintaining satisfaction of stakeholders with differing needs and expectations.
  • Managing communications between project stakeholders and team members.
  • Identifying and complying with project requirements in development of products and deliverables.
  • Managing the project team in successfully achieving project scope, schedule, and cost objectives.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management.
  • DOE O 413.3B knowledge and experience as it relates to project planning and execution is preferred.
  • Prefer demonstrated experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE) or National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) or equivalent at headquarters or field office level, or with state or federal regulators, or other national security agencies.
  • U.S. Citizenship


Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent training and experience and at least 12 years' related professional experience, which included at least 8 years' as a designated Project Manager.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field (construction management, engineering) or equivalent training and experience and at least 12 years' related professional experience

Travel

Position will be a hybrid role with 3 days working onsite per week, and 2 days working from home.
