Full Job Description
The Consultant Software Engineer will support Nationwide's Excess & Specialty Surplus BSA within the Order of the Phoenix team, supporting the Wholesale ExpressConnect 2.0 application. ExpressConnect 2.0 is built on Guidewire InsuranceNow and provides core contract-underwriting capabilities, including submission, rating, quoting, binding, policy issuance, and policy maintenance. The role will partner closely with business analysts, technology analysts, quality engineers, architects, product leaders, Guidewire, and dependent data and integration teams to deliver secure, reliable solutions for Excess, CPP, and related commercial products.

This is an attractive opportunity for an engineer who wants meaningful ownership of a highly visible, business-critical insurance platform. The OOTP team delivers product enhancements, rating and form changes, API capabilities, technical-debt remediation, security improvements, cloud and Guidewire upgrades, and production support.

The team's work directly supports Nationwide's Excess & Specialty business and has contributed to more than $1.4 billion in direct written premium. Candidates will also join a collaborative agile team that actively uses modern engineering practices and emerging tools, including GitHub Copilot and Glean for unit-test development, requirements analysis, test-case generation, API security reviews, and developer productivity.

The most important technical competencies for this role are hands-on experience with Guidewire InsuranceNow or a comparable property and casualty policy-administration platform; strong Java and object-oriented software-development skills; experience designing, developing, testing, and troubleshooting REST APIs and system integrations; practical knowledge of DevSecOps, Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines, secure coding, and vulnerability remediation; and strong diagnostic and testing skills across user-interface, API, integration, rating, forms, and policy-lifecycle functionality. These skills will be applied to configure and extend Guidewire functionality, implement rating and underwriting rules, support API consumers and integrations, improve automated and unit-test coverage, troubleshoot production and test-environment issues, and help prepare the application for Guidewire Cloud Platform modernization.

On a typical day, the Consultant Software Engineer will participate in agile ceremonies, backlog refinement, three-amigo discussions, and technical design sessions; analyze business requirements and translate them into maintainable code or configuration; develop, test, debug, document, and deploy software changes; review code and collaborate with developers, quality engineers, analysts, and business partners; investigate defects, incidents, vulnerabilities, and integration issues; and support release preparation, deployment validation, change management, and post-release monitoring. The engineer will also contribute to technical-debt reduction, API and application documentation, continuous-improvement efforts, knowledge sharing, and mentoring other team members while managing assigned priorities, dependencies, deadlines, and deliverables.

Preferred Skills:

Guidewire Insurance Now; extensive experience in API development and apigee; experience in code and configuration management of multiple development branches; extensive experience with DevOps Tools like GitHubActions (and GitHubCopilot) and Harness
