Job Summary

University of Michigan Health (UMH) is seeking a Construction Project Engineer Senior to join the Facilities Planning and Development (FPD) team. FPD provides user consultation and support services at numerous stages of project implementation, including concept development, planning, budgeting, funding, design, engineering, construction administration, project activation, and limited commissioning. Our mission is to provide world-class facilities and physical frameworks for a safe, clean, comfortable, functional, and healthy environment that directly supports our mission.

Responsibilities*
  • Completes review and analysis of facilities improvements, upgrades, repairs, and alterations. Performs field assessments and prepares investigation reports. Formulates opinions of project probable cost and project requirements. Develops project scopes, schedules/milestones, and budgets. Supports the ongoing Facility Condition Assessment program for building components and systems.
  • Oversees, manages, and reviews all aspects of project delivery for both owned and leased facilities to ensure compliance with client expectations and UMH guidelines. Directs and monitors the completion of programming, design development, construction documents, and bidding. Directly manages deactivation, construction, and activation activities. Schedules systems installations, inspections, and post-construction services. Coordinates delivery, removal, and installation of furniture, fixtures, and equipment with vendors and/or FPD support staff.
  • Serves as Facilities Planning and Development liaison with specific departments. Leverages the understanding of construction, project deactivation, and activation to assist in solving problems, estimating costs, and sequencing project activities.
  • Assists in the maintenance and updating of architectural and construction guidelines, standards, and preferred manufacturer lists. Develops and maintains a cost database. Researches construction products and methods, maintains vendor relationships, and stays up to date on knowledge of materials, performance, lead-times, and sustainability.
  • Regularly advises verbally and in writing on status, potential opportunities, and possible risks of improvements and projects to leadership, project partners, and end users. Prepares reports, presentations, correspondence, meeting minutes, and other documents to ensure timely and efficient communication and decision-making.
  • Ensures that project record documents (as-builts, O&M manuals, etc.) are properly archived and shared with appropriate staff and partners. Assists in maintaining compliance with Federal, State, local building codes, contract documents, hospital life safety and regulatory standards, ADA regulations, and infection control requirements.

Required Qualifications*
  • Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program or an NAAB-accredited first professional degree in Architecture.
  • Senior Level: At least 7-10 years of experience working as a construction manager, consultant in the construction or healthcare industry, and/or project manager.
  • Working knowledge of the design and construction of healthcare facilities and environments.
  • Solid leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to act independently with minimal supervision or direction, and the ability to make and act on decisions.
  • Has an understanding of building codes and healthcare construction requirements.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Works well independently and in a team setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) and Autodesk AutoCAD.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Licensure as an Architect or Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan.
