About the Role

Fivetran and dbt are seeking an experienced Compliance, Employment & Litigation Counsel to join our Legal team. This role will focus on global compliance, employment counseling and employment-related legal support across the United States, Canada, and Latin America, as well as assisting with a variety of dispute and litigation matters.

You will help provide legal guidance related to global compliance and to develop standards and operationalize compliance policies to support the maturation and expansion of the Company's compliance infrastructure. You will partner closely with our People Team and business partners to provide practical, business-focused employment advice on a broad range of workforce issues. You will also work alongside other members of the Legal team, to manage business disputes, including contract disputes, vendor disputes, bankruptcy matters, intellectual property issues, privacy-related claims, and other litigation matters as they arise.

This role is ideal for an attorney who enjoys combining compliance and day-to-day employment counseling with litigation and dispute management in a fast-paced technology company. The successful candidate will have compliance, employment law, and litigation experience, and the ability to independently manage legal matters while collaborating effectively across functions. This position will report to the VP, Compliance, Employment & Litigation.

This role is a full-time hybrid position based in our Denver, CO, and Oakland, CA, offices. Our hybrid work model offers a blend of remote flexibility and in-person collaboration, including two days in the office each week to connect and build as a team.

What You'll Do

Compliance
  • Develop policies and procedures related to ethics, export control, sanctions, anti-corruption, and conflicts of interest to encourage a culture of compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Conduct internal investigations of compliance issues, business partner and government inquiries, and handle responses and resolution and assist with overseeing compliance hotline monitoring, responses, resolutions and reports.
  • Oversee compliance training and related programs to foster a culture of compliance.
  • Stay informed of peer company best practices and relevant global legal developments.
  • Drive creative, customer-focused, practical and proactive legal guidance enabling the Company to execute on its goals, objectives, mission, vision and values in a compliant and ethical way.

Employment Counseling
  • Advise the People Team, and business partners on a wide range of employment law matters across the employee lifecycle.
  • Provide legal guidance on hiring, performance management, accommodations, leaves of absence, workplace investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Support organizational changes, workforce planning initiatives, restructurings, and reductions in force.
  • Draft, review, and update employment-related agreements, policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Monitor legal developments and advise the business on emerging employment law requirements and risks, including AI-related developments.
  • Support employment-related matters across the United States, Canada, and Latin America, in collaboration with internal and external partners.

Litigation & Dispute Management
  • Manage employment-related claims, administrative charges, demand letters, arbitrations, and litigation matters.
  • Support and manage disputes involving commercial contracts, vendors, intellectual property, privacy, bankruptcy, and other legal issues, working with internal stakeholders and outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Conduct factual investigations and work with internal stakeholders to collect information, preserve evidence, and prepare witnesses.
  • Manage outside counsel and associated legal budgets for assigned matters.
  • Develop and manage discovery and e-discovery related processes.
  • Assess legal and business risk and provide practical recommendations regarding dispute resolution strategies.
  • Support the development and implementation of processes that reduce litigation risk and improve dispute management.

Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Collaborate effectively with all business teams across the company.
  • Deliver practical, solution-oriented legal advice that balances risk management with business objectives.
  • Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives as the company continues to grow globally.
  • Help build scalable legal processes that support a high-growth technology business.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law
  • 5+ years of legal experience, including significant compliance, employment and/or litigation experience.
  • Strong judgment and ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice.
  • A problem-solving mentality, willing to make a call and be an active decision maker.
  • Orientation towards process and operations, and ability to spot and act on improvements to systems, standards, templates, policies and practices that help reduce risk, remove friction, and propel the business.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work across time zones as needed; some travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong preference for prior in-house experience.
  • Experience supporting a high-growth technology or SaaS company.
  • Experience advising on employment matters in Canada and/or Latin America.
  • Experience handling commercial disputes, contract disputes, vendor disputes, intellectual property matters, privacy-related disputes, or bankruptcy matters.
  • Understanding and experience handling complex e-discovery issues.
  • Experience working in a globally distributed organization.
