The base salary will be $66,350 - $94,700 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate's experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.
ResponsibilitiesThe Communications Specialist manages the development, implementation, monitoring and assessment of communications strategies and initiatives for Western Technology Services (WTS) with a goal of building and promoting WTS technology solutions and services to the campus community in support of the teaching and research missions of the University. The role will collaborate with leaders and subject matter experts in WTS and other university areas to design, create, and assess communications and marketing efforts, develop a cohesive communication strategy using all communication channels available (e.g., web, email, social media, print, etc.), manage campus-wide communications projects, and provide advice on related matters. The Communications Specialist will work in collaboration to develop and implement new and revised communications strategies, plans, processes and best practices and will protect, promote, and enhance the brand and reputation of WTS, and in turn Western, by managing communications and ensuring adherence with University policies and guidelines.
QualificationsEducation:
- Undergraduate Degree in Communications, Public Affairs, English/Literature, Journalism/Media or related program
- International Association of Business Communicators Designation completed or in progress
Experience:
- 5 years of experience developing and implementing communications and marketing strategic plans with responsibility for managing staff and projects and developing communications
- Experience working in an IT and/or University environment preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of e-communication tools including website design architecture, graphic design principles and with social media platforms relevant to University populations
- Knowledge of theory and best practices in media relations, public affairs and marketing trends and best practices
- In-depth knowledge of principles of writing, including grammar and style, argument, and coherence and attention to detail, proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
- Project management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
- Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
- Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
- Ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
- Media skills with solid communications judgment to present and package information to maximize interest
- Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
- Ability to analyze metrics and consider past communications to craft engaging written communications using social media or other appropriate channels
- Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
- Innovative and flexible critical thinking skills to adjust to and implement new processes or technology to the University's advantage
- Demonstrated intercultural competency and knowledge of cross-cultural research and work practices
- Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with public relations issues related to higher education

- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University's events and activities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, with Adobe Creative Suite, with content management systems (such as Cascade) and 3rd party mass mailing services (such as Campaign Monitor)
- Ability to develop strategies that are in line with WTS's mission and which balance competing priorities
- Proven ability to build both formal and informal professional relationships within, across, and external to organizational boundaries
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
