Full Job Description
Leidos has an opportunity for a Communications and Technical Writer Team Lead supporting the Managed Infrastructure Service Provider (MiSP) contract for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This fully remote position leads a team responsible for developing technical documentation, training materials, and communications that support a large-scale federal IT modernization program. The role works closely with engineers, product teams, and customer stakeholders to deliver clear, accurate, and user-focused content.

The MiSP contract supports CMS's modernization efforts by providing a secure and scalable hosting environment that enables the migration of legacy applications to multi-cloud platforms while supporting the modernization of existing systems. As part of a collaborative, matrixed environment, you will partner with application owners, CMS stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality communications and documentation that support program objectives and customer needs.

In this role you will:
  • Lead a team of technical writers supporting multiple product teams, ensuring balanced workload distribution, timely delivery of high-quality documentation, and escalation of risks or issues as needed.
  • Partner with engineers, developers, architects, and subject matter experts to gather, analyze, and synthesize complex technical information into high-quality training materials, technical documentation, and customer communications.
  • Serve as the primary technical writing lead, collaborating with customers, clients, program leadership, and cross-contract teams to define project scope, communication strategies, reporting requirements, and documentation priorities.
  • Develop and oversee the creation of technical briefs, web articles, training materials, knowledge articles, and technical documentation using Confluence, Jira, Contentful, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Champion plain language principles and ensure all written content is accurate, engaging, Section 508 compliant, and aligned with program quality standards.
  • Establish documentation priorities, coordinate work assignments across the technical writing team, and monitor deliverables to ensure customer commitments are met.
  • Represent the program during customer meetings, technical reviews, presentations, and executive readouts, providing recommendations, documenting decisions, and communicating project status.
  • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused environment while mentoring team members and promoting continuous improvement of documentation processes and standards.
  • Demonstrate a positive, customer-centric, "can do" attitude while building trusted relationships across engineering, program, and customer organizations.

We are seeking a self-starter and proven leader who is comfortable building relationships across established teams in a complex environment to ensure the delivery of accurate, impactful, and customer-focused technical communications. The ideal candidate is an experienced technical writer with demonstrated leadership experience, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to drive multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Delivery Management Manager, you will:
  • Lead collaboration with engineering teams to understand technical architectures, systems, and processes, translating complex technical information into concise, business-focused documentation, training materials, and web content for diverse audiences.
  • Write and oversee the development of product, service, and project communications including training briefs, executive presentations, targeted communications, internal portal content, digital newsletters, knowledge articles, FAQs, and technical documentation.
  • Review, edit, proofread, and provide quality assurance for documentation produced by the technical writing team to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with established standards.
  • Assign and coordinate work across the technical writing team, monitor progress against schedules, and provide regular status updates to program leadership and customers.
  • Consult with subject matter experts, engineering teams, project personnel, and customer stakeholders to gather information, validate technical accuracy, and ensure compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations.
  • Independently manage documentation efforts through customer review and approval processes while supporting multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Ensure all documentation meets editorial standards, government specifications, accessibility requirements, branding guidelines, and quality expectations.
  • Recommend improvements to documentation processes, templates, standards, and workflows to improve efficiency and consistency across the program.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline with 6+ years of technical writing experience supporting programs or contracts of similar scope, complexity, and technical depth. Additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating technical writing teams, assigning work, mentoring team members, and ensuring successful delivery of multiple concurrent documentation efforts, preferred.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, development, product management, customer, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong experience researching, analyzing, organizing, and translating complex technical information into clear, concise documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, competing deadlines, and customer expectations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience developing documentation using tools such as Confluence, Jira, Contentful, Microsoft Office, or comparable documentation platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
