Commissioning Technician

$45/hr - $55/hr + Per Diem (If Eligible) + Benefits + Career Development Opportunities

The best Commissioning Technicians do more than perform testing and documentation. They help ensure complex building systems operate as intended, support project teams through critical milestones, and play a key role in delivering successful projects to owners and stakeholders.

At RK Industries, you'll support the planning, coordination, execution, and documentation of commissioning activities for commercial and industrial construction projects. Working alongside Commissioning Managers, Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, and vendors, you'll help verify that mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and life safety systems are installed, tested, balanced, and operating according to project requirements.

You'll gain hands-on experience with system start-up, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, and project turnover processes while developing expertise in one of the construction industry's fastest-growing specialties.

What You'll Do
  • Support development and maintenance of project commissioning plans
  • Assist with design reviews and constructability evaluations related to system performance
  • Prepare and maintain commissioning documentation, logs, checklists, and reports
  • Support development and coordination of commissioning schedules aligned with project milestones
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Perform field verification of installation readiness before system start-up and testing
  • Track commissioning issues, deficiencies, corrective actions, and resolution status
  • Verify completion of installation checklists and pre-functional testing requirements
  • Execute functional performance testing under the direction of the Commissioning Manager
  • Verify system sequences of operation and control responses in the field
  • Document testing results and assist with issue tracking, troubleshooting, and re-testing activities
  • Support coordination of Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) activities and schedules
  • Review TAB reports and assist in identifying discrepancies and deficiencies
  • Verify systems meet final air and water balancing requirements
  • Assist with integrated systems testing, including HVAC, controls, power, and life safety systems
  • Coordinate participation among trades, vendors, and stakeholders during testing activities
  • Compile commissioning records, reports, and project documentation
  • Assist in review of operation and maintenance manuals, warranties, and as-built documents
  • Participate in owner training sessions and support project turnover activities
  • Support seasonal testing, warranty reviews, deferred commissioning, and post-occupancy evaluations
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving building systems issues after project turnover
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

What You Bring
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and industry experience
  • 3-7 years of experience in construction, manufacturing, commissioning, building systems, service operations, or a related technical environment
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), HVAC, controls, and industrial systems
  • Experience supporting system start-up, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, or equipment performance verification
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, and technical documentation
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes, including pre-functional checklists, functional performance testing, and issue tracking
  • Experience coordinating with subcontractors, vendors, and field teams on active project sites
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices, industry codes, and quality standards
  • Proficiency with commissioning documentation, reports, punch lists, spreadsheets, and project management tools
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project teams
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites and work in active construction and industrial environments

Physical Requirements
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions
  • Stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, balance, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
  • Work in dusty, noisy, hot, cold, hazardous, elevated, and confined environments
  • Utilize both fine motor skills and gross motor skills to perform technical and field-related tasks
  • Read drawings, documentation, instruments, and testing data using near, distance, and peripheral vision
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and in challenging construction environments as required
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently
  • Maintain reliable transportation and travel between office and project locations as needed
  • Maintain consistent attendance and support project schedules
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures
  • Exercise stop-work authority whenever unsafe conditions are identified
