Position Summary

The Commercial Risk team is part of Marathon's Middle Office organization and plays a critical role in supporting Marathon's Supply and Trading functions by providing independent oversight of market risk and trading performance. The team delivers value through the measurement and reporting of market risk associated with commercial trading and hedging activities, as well as through in-depth financial analysis and reporting. This role is essential to understanding daily trading performance and ensuring the organization captures value from its supply and trading operations, leveraging strong financial expertise and commercial acumen.

The team ensures that financial results are aligned with prevailing market conditions, offering an independent perspective on trading outcomes and confirming that activities remain within defined risk limits and governance frameworks

As part of the team, you will expand your understanding of the oil energy markets. This will include how various oil commodities are priced and how purchase and sale transactions and related transportation costs impact the associated trade. You will also develop a deeper appreciation of how financial instruments are used to hedge and used to minimize the risks associated with the physical side of the transactions. You will gain a better understanding of the concept of price exposure and of Marked to Market (MtM) methodologies and how they apply to the oil energy markets. This role opens future opportunities to join commercial teams to supply and trade commodities in an exciting and expanding company and industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs daily financial analysis on system generated daily MtM trading performance and issues reports on the portfolio priced position and results.


  • Collaborates with other team members and stakeholders including Accounting, Refining Operations, Schedulers and Traders, designing and enhancing processes and procedures to enable accurate and timely priced position information.


  • Validates inputs to MtM results for accuracy and consistency with policies and procedures, tests and validates new data sources enabling faster and more accurate compilation of position data.


  • Develops and maintains analysis reports and performs special analysis as requested by senior management.


  • Supports design, development, and implementation of the Supply & Trading portfolio structure.

Minimum Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related discipline required.


  • Two (2) or more years of experience in analysis of financial results and reporting and/or experience in refinery or supply operations.


  • Ability to use and create Power BI reports preferred.
