Responsibilities

  • Manage complete transactions from title and corporate searches to drafting closing documents.
  • Draft various legal documents based on precedents or directions.
  • Conduct due diligence searches for real estate acquisitions, including title and off-title inquiries.
  • Organize, track, and maintain document files using computer databases.
  • Initiate follow-up actions and anticipate next steps in transactions.
  • Communicate with clients to gather and provide needed information as directed.
  • Correspond with government entities and opposing parties.
  • Prepare reports and perform additional duties as required.

Full Job Description
PROFILE

We are currently recruiting for a hard-working, energetic, and detail-oriented Law Clerk to join our dynamic team. The candidate will primarily support the professionals in the Commercial Real Estate Practice Area in our Real Estate and Banking Department. The position involves both independent work and collaborative work across the team comprised of lawyers, other clerks and legal administrative assistants.

RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Has complete carriage of transactions from title to off title and corporate searches to drafting Closing, transactional and relate documents.
    • Drafts a variety of documentation from precedents and/or direction from professional, including agreements, closing documents and correspondence to meet the needs of the various steps required throughout the conduct of the file.
    • Conducting due diligence searches (including off-title enquiries) in connection with real estate acquisitions, conducting and reviewing title and off-title searches, preparing instruments for registration, drafting requisitions and title repair matters.
    • Systematically organizes, tracks and maintains document files and correspondence, using computer databases and software.
    • Initiates follow up actions where and when necessary and pre-emptively considers next steps in the evolution of a transaction.
    • Liaises with client to obtain and, when directed by the professional, provide information.
    • Receives directions from the professional on the status of the file, the steps required for the conduct of the file, with instructions to meet critical deadlines.
    • Corresponds with government authorities and opposing solicitors/parties.
    • Prepares reports.
    • Any other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
    • Ideal candidate has a proficiency in real estate matters and also experience and/or interest in applying them in a lending, leasing and development context.
    • Thorough knowledge and experience using Teraview along with ability to conduct and review title searches., document production and troubleshooting with the Land Registry Office.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with other Firm members, with the aptitude to take care of clients' needs in a professional and courteous manner.
    • Capacity to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
    • Knowledgeable about current relevant legislation and government regulations.
    • In depth knowledge of real estate and lending legal terminology and principles.
    • Detail oriented and ability to analyze legal documents for accuracy.
    • Produce a high quality and quantity of work product, often under tight timelines.
    • Able to prioritize and to redefine priorities when necessary.
    • Handle stress in a business-like manner.
    • Strong technical aptitude with excellent knowledge and experience in MS Office.
    • Law Clerk/Paralegal or Legal Assistant Diploma/Certificate.
    • 8+ years as a Law Clerk/Paralegal.

The starting range for this role is $75,000 to $90,000. Starting salary will be determined based on an applicant's individual skills, competencies and unique qualifications. Gowling WLG employees have the potential to exceed this range based on tenure and performance.
