Job Description

This role can be based in any Environmental Services office location in North America. The position requires regular in-office presence in support of our flexible work practice and may require travel to a variety of offices throughout North America.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Commercial Manager to join our Environmental Services Business Operating Unit (ES BOU). This senior leadership role partners with operations, growth, pursuit, and project teams to guide business and legal decisions across pursuits, contracts, negotiations, and project delivery, driving successful outcomes while minimizing financial risk.

Reporting to the Business Operating Unit Operations Leader (BOU OL), this role will engage directly on pursuits, client contractual negotiations, and projects with elevated risk profiles, including multinational clients and others spanning multiple geographic regions. By bridging legal, commercial, and execution priorities, the Commercial Manager will play a critical role in delivering win-win outcomes for both Stantec and its clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee, guide and where necessary, participate in or lead negotiations with clients, teaming partners, and subconsultants, regarding contract terms & conditions, scoping and commercial aspects including pricing and change orders on the identified elevated risk profile pursuits and projects.
  • Mentor and develop project pursuit teams and project teams on projects identified by the BOU to improve commercial, contracting and negotiating acumen.
  • Work with the Directors of Project Management and the ES leadership team to promote implementation of multiple delivery models across our portfolio of projects
  • Work with the Directors of Project Management and Account Managers to offer guidance for projects with higher risk profiles to enhance performance through effective change management, including identifying and documenting changes conditions and their impacts on Stantec, pursuing change order and contract amendments, and maintaining appropriate communication with clients. Independently or by selecting or advising suitable personnel, provide direction and support for complex and high-risk projects to safeguard Stantec's interests.
  • Develop and mentor staff and succession candidates.
  • Develop high trust relationships with business leadership, project managers, pursuit leads and functional service teams and become a sought-after resource to teams seeking project success.
  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment.
  • Uphold a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, encourages individual integrity, and focuses on customer and service delivery.
  • Provide support through ongoing interface with BOU Leaders regarding diagnosis and resolution of operational issues and continual improvement opportunities.

Qualifications

YOUR CAPABILITIES AND CREDENTIALS:
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of twenty years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Strong proven commercial acumen. Experience in contract law, risk management and the A-E industry strongly preferred.
  • Strong commercial awareness and negotiating skills including pricing strategies and both contractual and non-contractual risk mitigations.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise risks and able to exercise good judgment as to which risks can be mitigated, and which risks must be avoided.
  • Extensive knowledge of items that may have a significant impact on projects or Stantec including project schedules, regulatory landscape, technical risks, contractual terms, or client behaviors.
  • Strong contractual knowledge and understanding of project delivery for multiple delivery models (e.g. design-build, APD, EPC, P3).
  • High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, excellent communicator.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team while seamlessly transitioning to a leadership role where the situation requires it.
  • Strong client liaison skills.
