Full Job Description
Role description:

We are seeking an experienced commercial diver to support underwater inspection and construction verification activities on marine and coastal infrastructure works in Vancouver and along the British Columbia coast. The role suits a working diver who is comfortable operating on an active construction site and who can produce inspection evidence that engineers can rely on.

The commercial diver will support the site engineering team during Engineering Services During Construction, carrying out underwater inspection, survey support, condition assessment and light underwater tasks associated with quay walls, wharves, piled structures, sheet piling, revetments, breakwaters, scour protection, outfalls, intakes and temporary marine works.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the marine and resident engineering team and within a certified dive contractor framework, supporting the field review and verification duties carried out by the Engineer of Record on the marine works.

Role accountabilities:

In this role you will carry out underwater inspection of marine structures and the surrounding seabed, covering pile and sheet pile condition, coating and corrosion assessment, weld and connection inspection, concrete condition, scour and undermining, armour and filter layer placement, backfill condition and debris or obstruction identification.

You will record findings through underwater video, still photography, sketches, measurements and thickness readings where required, and you will provide clear dive reports and observation records that allow the engineering team to reach a technical conclusion without ambiguity.

You will support marine construction activity by assisting with the setting out and verification of underwater placement, rigging and derigging, guide and template positioning, the recovery of dropped items, the clearing of minor obstructions and the support of survey and instrumentation deployment.

You will contribute to dive planning and risk assessment, including the review of tidal windows, current, visibility, vessel traffic, exclusion zones and lock out arrangements for adjacent plant, and you will take part in toolbox talks and emergency response drills.

You will maintain and inspect diving equipment, keep dive logs and gas records up to date, and confirm that all diving operations follow the applicable regulations, the approved dive plan and the project health and safety requirements. You will report any condition that affects the safety of the dive team or the integrity of the works without delay.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Valid commercial diving certification recognised in Canada, such as CSA Z275.4 Unrestricted Surface Supplied Diver, or an equivalent DCBC or ADCI qualification
  • Minimum 12 years of commercial diving experience, with a substantial record of work on marine civil construction, ports, harbours or coastal infrastructure
  • Current diver medical certificate and current occupational first aid and oxygen administration certification appropriate to the diving operation
  • Demonstrated experience with underwater inspection and reporting of marine structures, including video and photographic documentation
  • Working knowledge of WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Part 24 Diving Operations and of CSA Z275.2 requirements
  • Experience with surface supplied diving equipment, communications, and the use of underwater tools including hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, cutting and welding, and non-destructive testing techniques such as ultrasonic thickness measurement is an asset
  • Experience working in cold water, tidal current and low visibility conditions typical of the British Columbia coast
  • Ability to work as part of a certified dive team under an approved dive plan, and to work alongside marine plant and an active construction spread
  • Small vessel operator proficiency, marine radio operator certificate and relevant marine safety training such as MED are assets
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the discipline to record observations accurately and consistently
