  • Conduct physician queries as necessary to clarify documentation.
  • Complete annual competency requirements and attend educational sessions.
  • Participate in staff meetings to stay updated on coding practices and issues.

Job Summary

Coder Abstractor Inpatient Level III codes and abstracts medical records according to established guidelines; performs limited analysis, which includes validation of appropriate documentation substantiate coding.

Essential Functions
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Demonstrates ability to use all of HIM software including Solventum (Formerly 3M) 360 Encompass, EPIC, CloudMed, Iodine, and SmarterDx, etc.
  • Codes and abstracts to highest level of specificity.
  • Accurately apply AHA Coding guidelines as they pertain to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.
  • Adheres to quality and coding productivity standards set forth by Coding Manager. Must maintain a quarterly accuracy rate of 95% or higher.
  • Performs follow-up as necessary within timeframe set forth by Coding Manager. Follows escalation Policy to ensure timely billing.
  • Must perform physician queries as needed.
  • Completes annual department/hospital competency requirements in NetLearning.
  • Attends staff meetings or equivalent as requested/required to update knowledge related to current department/hospital issues and coding updates.
  • Maintains accreditations and attends education sessions arranged by the hospital.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

  • 4-6 years 3-5 years of experience required. Required
  • Strong applied knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and ROM/SOI assignment and logic. (High proficiency)
  • Medical terminology and knowledge of anatomy and physiology required. (High proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required. (Low proficiency)
  • AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association Upon Hire Required or
  • AAPC Certified Professional Biller - American Academy of Professional Coders Upon Hire Required
  • RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician - American Health Information Management Association Upon Hire Preferred or
  • RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator - American Health Information Management Association Preferred
