Description of WorkThe North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Coastal Wildlife Operations Supervisor (Conservation Biologist Manager) for the Wildlife Management Division.
The mission of the Wildlife Management Division is to conserve wildlife species and habitats and to develop, implement, and facilitate sound wildlife management policies and programs to ensure the wise use of wildlife resources by North Carolina citizens. This position is critical to accomplishing the Commission's goals of conserving fish and wildlife habitats and protecting, managing and enhancing wildlife populations statewide.
The primary purpose of this Coastal Wildlife Operations Supervisor position is to provide an objective and coordinated system of wildlife management programs directed at habitat and species management and constituent support. This position directs procedures and policies both regionally and statewide to ensure that the Operations programs and activities are biologically and sociologically sound. The position also provides coordination with other agency programs and divisions within the region. The position reports directly to the Assistant Chief (Conservation Mgmt. Coordinator) and supervises 6 full-time wildlife biologists.
The Coastal Wildlife Operations Supervisor will also:
• Coordinate with counterparts in other regions to facilitate statewide continuity within the Program.
• Coordinate with other public and private entities outside the agency in the administration of Program activities.
• Interact with various administrative sections within the Agency to develop and monitor appropriate budgets for operations and complete all State and Agency administrative requirements associated with the Program in the region.
• Ensure that personnel are available to meet the data collection, survey, research, and public service needs of the Division within the region and that all activities are conducted in accordance with best available science and agency and state policies and procedures.
• Assist with program activities in the field within the region or elsewhere in the state as required to accomplish strategic goals and objectives of the Agency and of the Wildlife Management Division.
• Monitor ongoing projects and provide technical expertise related to overall activities.
• Interact with biologists to provide leadership and guidance in the prioritization, organization, and implementation of all work unit activities.
• Provide counseling and guidance to biologists to assist them in making decisions regarding work activities and scheduling.
• Conduct regular work unit and project meetings to assess project status, reviewing activity and progress reports, and reviewing and approving purchases.
• Attend joint meetings with other Agency staff members and individuals and entities outside the agency.
• Initiate appropriate disciplinary measures and participate in grievance resolutions at the field level.
• Review job applications and conduct interviews of prospective employees in the program.
This is a HOME-BASED position. The workstation for this position is in the employee's home-based office using an agency-provided computer. The employee in this position is expected to provide home office space compliant with WRC and State policies. This position requires a home-based duty station in the WRC-Wildlife Management Coastal Region, specific to Districts 1, 2 and 4 mainland areas.
A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week. This position requires frequent daily travel with occasional overnight stays.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences- Familiar with a state wildlife agency's structure, political realities, the regulation process, and technical aspects of the job.
- Understanding of the advanced principles of scientific methods, biological techniques, zoology, botany, statistics, forestry, and ecology are necessary.
- Motivational and personnel management skills to guide personnel under his/her direct supervision in accomplishing predetermined and changing program goals, objectives, and policies.
- Accomplished communication skills to coordinate with resource professionals, relay technical information to employees, and to the public.
- Familiar with state budget management practices.
Special Qualification/Requirement: Valid NC Driver's License is required within 90 days of employment.

Classification Specs | NC Office of Human Resources
Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of related experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
