At GCI, we solve the hard problems. As a Cloud Engineer SME, a typical day will include the following duties:

Work Requirements

  • Contribute directly to advancing the Sponsor's strategic objectives in the cyber domain by focusing on critical disciplines such as cloud engineering, data lifecycle management and optimization, and strategic contracting.
  • Collaborate with various teams to develop, maintain, and optimize secure and efficient systems that support the expertise-driven mission of the customer's office.
  • Design and implement complex system architectures and infrastructure that support the collection, processing, and analysis of cyber intelligence data to meet organizational objectives.
  • Ensure the scalability, reliability, and performance of systems critical to the customer's cyber mission.
  • Identify potential vulnerabilities and perform comprehensive risk assessments and vulnerability testing to implement security measures across customer computing environments.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on system security, compliance, accreditation, and best practices for secure data transfer and ingestion.
  • Recommend and configure tools for data lifecycle management, ensuring the integrity, secure transfer, and accessibility of data across all stages of the data lifecycle.
  • Provide expertise in the implementation and optimization of data orchestration platforms that align with the customer's mission requirements.
  • Assess, integrate, and manage resources in cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) to support organizational objectives and enhance cloud computing capabilities.
  • Perform both global and local administrative functions within cloud infrastructure to facilitate access to services and data, ensuring these align with customer's mission-critical needs.
  • Make recommendations and implement cloud-based solutions to support the secure, effective operation of critical cyber systems.
  • Use the following Required Tools and Technologies; Cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS), Security assessment tools, Data orchestration platforms, System architectural design software (e.g., architectural modeling tools), Software for managing, planning, and documenting projects (e.g., Jira, Confluence, SharePoint).
  • Research or implement, where possible and at Sponsor direction, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) integration into systems engineering, application or tool development.


Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in system engineering, managing, and optimizing complex IT systems and infrastructure, particularly within cloud environments such as Azure and AWS.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and deploying solutions within cloud platforms, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Demonstrated experience in system security, including implementation of security measures and conducting comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience securing systems in compliance with established guidelines, e.g., NIST standards, including experience with compliance and accreditation processes such as Authority to Operate (ATO) and Authorization to Deploy (ATD).
  • Demonstrated experience in data management, including secure data transfer and ingestion, as well as handling large-scale data sets while maintaining high standards of data integrity and security.
  • Demonstrated experience using data orchestration and lifecycle management tools to optimize data processes and integration across various platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting and translating complex technical information into clear and concise language for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience or familiarity with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) concepts, demonstrating exposure to related integration methodologies in systems engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining secure communications channels and network infrastructure to support mission-critical operations.


Desired Skills

  • Demonstrated experience with Assessment and Authorization (A&A) processes, including familiarity with the steps required to secure and maintain system accreditations and authorizations.
  • Demonstrated experience participating in security assessments and contributing to the development of assessment artifacts and documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience with Python scripting for automation, system management tasks, and developing custom scripts to streamline operations within complex IT environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with Windows PowerShell scripting for automating administrative tasks, managing systems, and maintaining secure configurations across multiple platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with strong communication skills, with demonstrated experience working effectively with cross-functional teams, including both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
