What You Will Do - Essential Responsibilities

  • Work closely with internal and external team members to develop business capabilities and automation that enable internal customers to move quickly and deliver on business needs.
  • Collaborate with other engineers on design, product management, and systems architecture to develop experimental solutions and bring great ideas to life.
  • Share ideas internally and evolve them based on feedback and critique within an agile environment.
  • Continually evolve the platform and its operations using solid engineering and agile practices.
  • Stay current on industry trends and best practices to continuously improve how we work and ensure our customer experience is the best it can be.
  • Leverage emerging AI technologies to gain efficiencies and increase time to market for deliverables that enable business capabilities.


Purpose of the Role

Credit and Originations is a strategic and critical growth area for CarMax and CarMax Auto Finance (CAF), enabling consumers to easily apply for financing and receive funding offers that drive efficient vehicle acquisition while managing organizational financial risk.

As an Cloud Engineer II within CAF Technology, you will be part of a team of Engineers responsible for interfacing consumer credit application data with internal and external systems - delivering value and efficient solutions that adhere to the highest standards of security and compliance.

You will be results-oriented, data-driven, and comfortable contributing ideas and influencing outcomes through sound engineering judgment rather than formal authority. You'll take ownership of your piece of the technology roadmap, partnering with teammates on short-term delivery and longer-term platform decisions that shape CarMax's technology journey. You should be passionate about availability, security, and data privacy, and energized by building a robust, well-engineered technology environment.

You'll contribute to a cross-functional effort to modernize legacy systems, leverage AI technologies, and build scalable platforms that streamline operations and enhance the associate and customer experience.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technology field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience.


Cloud-Specific Qualifications and Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience working in and building infrastructure within a cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud).
  • 2+ years of scripting or coding experience in one or more languages.
  • Build infrastructure, networks, and systems for scalability, resiliency, availability, and recovery through infrastructure-as-code.
  • Demonstrable experience with a range of cloud capabilities including storage, key/secret management, virtual networking, web apps, identity and access management, virtual machines, and automated deployments.
  • Demonstrable experience with software development, preferably in one or more of the following: .NET, .NET Core, C# and PowerShell.
  • Demonstrable experience building and deploying resilient cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrable experience creating and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting Windows or Linux operating systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, along with problem investigation and diagnostic skills.
  • Passion for eliminating repetitive manual processes through automation.
  • Experience with Cosmos DB and relational databases such as MS SQL Server, preferred.


Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the CarMax Corp Office, Richmond VA or CarMax Auto Finance office, Kennesaw GA and have a Hybrid work arrangement.
  • Associates based in Richmond or Kennesaw work onsite 4 days per week.


Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be considered for this specific role.

The annual salary for this position is:
$92,200.00 - $138,300.00
May be eligible for bonus and equity.

Except as otherwise required by state law, CarMax Associates are entitled to the following paid sick, vacation, and holiday time.

Associates that are considered full-time hourly or commission/incentive eligible:
  • To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company.
  • For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday. If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay.


Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
