Medical Director, Neurosciences Institute

(Acute & Ambulatory Services)

Position Summary

The Medical Director provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for neurosciences services across both acute and ambulatory settings within the assigned market. This includes oversight of ambulatory clinics, inpatient provider teams, facility and non-facility programs, and inpatient neurosciences beds. In partnership with administrative leadership, the Medical Director ensures high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing growth, performance, and alignment with Novant Health's mission and strategic priorities. The Medical Director may support additional markets as directed.

This role requires a minimum of 240 administrative hours annually.

Essential Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
  • Lead the development and implementation of patient-care strategies aligned with Novant Health's mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.
  • Facilitate long-range planning for the Institute and support execution of system-wide initiatives.
  • Promote innovation, guide process improvement, and ensure alignment across acute and ambulatory divisions.

Clinical Standards & Program Oversight
  • Develop and maintain standards of practice, clinical protocols, and care pathways to minimize unwarranted variation.
  • Oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of patient care services across the continuum.
  • Assess market presence and recommend opportunities for expansion, additional locations, and service-line growth.
  • Lead documentation standardization efforts for clinical providers.

Operational & Financial Management
  • Share accountability for operational performance and financial outcomes with the administrative Institute Leader.
  • Review monthly budget variance reports and co-lead the annual budget planning process.
  • Identify revenue-enhancement and cost-reduction opportunities aligned with best-practice benchmarks.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Serve as a liaison with hospitalists, specialists, community physicians, and external agencies-including state mental health organizations.
  • Ensure timely and consistent communication of institute objectives, performance metrics, and key updates to staff and physicians.
  • Facilitate pharmacy partnership for medication protocols and cost-effective prescribing options.

Quality & Performance Improvement
  • Review monthly quality metrics and initiate actions to address opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure section chiefs set and uphold quality standards within their divisions.
  • Promote a culture of safety, service recovery, and optimal patient experience.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction scores related to physician care and provide targeted feedback.

Talent Development & Provider Leadership
  • Develop and mentor physician leaders across the Institute.
  • Lead recruitment, selection, and retention efforts for physicians and advanced practice clinicians.
  • Hold providers accountable for performance outcomes and support professional development.
  • Provide coaching, counseling, and conflict resolution as needed.

Goal Setting & Achievement
  • Develop annual goals aligned with organizational strategic initiatives.
  • Direct physicians and teams in executing actions to achieve approved goals.
