Lead Speech-Language Pathologist Job Description

Position Summary

The Lead Speech-Language Pathologist (Lead SLP) provides clinical leadership within the clinic by supporting quality of care, clinician mentorship, documentation oversight, and adherence to Telespeech Therapy policies and procedures. This role serves as a key clinical resource for SLPs and SLPAs while helping maintain consistency, accountability, and high standards of patient care across the clinic.

The Lead SLP works collaboratively with clinic leadership to support daily clinic operations, provide clinical guidance, and promote strong communication and professional development among clinicians.

Essential Functions

Lead Responsibilities

Clinical Presence and Support
• Provide a consistent daily clinical leadership presence within the clinic. • Serve as a point of contact for clinical questions while maintaining appropriate job scope boundaries.
• Support clinic flow and operations when clinical insight or guidance is needed. • Maintain open, professional, and frequent communication with clinic leadership regarding clinical operations and concerns.
• Assist in identifying opportunities for improved workflow, communication, and patient experience.

Quality of Care and Clinical Procedures
• Support consistency in therapy quality, treatment approaches, and clinical procedures. • Promote adherence to Telespeech Therapy policies, procedures, and clinical expectations. • Monitor clinician communication with patients and families to ensure professionalism and quality service.
• Ensure Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) practice within their job responsibilities and licensure scope.
• Lead by example in maintaining high standards of patient care, professionalism, and documentation quality.
• Support implementation and reinforcement of clinic standards and best practices.

Documentation Oversight and Mentorship
• Review clinician documentation for accuracy, quality, compliance, and timeliness. • Conduct, at minimum, a monthly randomized review of each clinician's SOAP notes. • Document findings and review feedback with clinicians during scheduled check-ins. • Mentor SLPs and SLPAs in treatment planning, clinical decision-making, and documentation practices.
• Meet regularly with clinicians to provide feedback regarding work quality, clinical processes, and professional growth.
• Provide guidance and support to clinicians requiring additional coaching or follow-up. • Communicate significant clinical concerns, repeated documentation deficiencies, or matters requiring administrative or disciplinary escalation to clinic leadership and/or the appropriate Director.

Functional Responsibilities

Assessment and Diagnosis:
• Administration and interpretation of formalized and informal assessments, as well as procedure-based evaluations to evaluate a patient's speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing abilities to identify specific disorders.

Treatment Planning:
• Create individualized treatment plans tailored to a patient's specific needs and goals.

Therapeutic Intervention:
• Implement various techniques and exercises to help patients improve their communication skills, strengthen swallowing muscles, and enhance overall function.
• Provide speech and language therapy to patients and/or students in both individual and group settings.

Patient and Family Education:
• Provide clear and supportive counseling to patients and their families about their condition, treatment options, and strategies for managing disorders.

Record Keeping:
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient evaluations, treatment progress, and outcomes to ensure continuity of care and for billing purposes.

Collaboration:
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team with other healthcare professionals, teachers, parents/ caregivers, school administrators, and other therapists to provide comprehensive patient care.

Progress Monitoring:
• Regularly evaluate patient progress to adjust treatment plans and strategies as needed to ensure optimal outcomes.

Requirements/Qualifications:
• A Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
• Valid California State License in Speech-Language Pathology- must be maintained throughout employment.
• Current ASHA certification (CCC-SLP)
• Experience supervising or mentoring clinicians and/or SLPAs preferred. • Strong knowledge of documentation standards, compliance requirements, and therapy best practices.
• Equivalent to two (2) years of experience providing patient-based services. (preferred) • Completion of ASHA supervision requirements - must be maintained throughout employment.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Talents
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
• Strong knowledge of speech, fluency, language, voice, cognitive, hearing, and social communication disorders, with the ability to accurately evaluate, diagnose, and provide evidence-based treatment across diverse patient populations.
• Skill in developing and implementing individualized care plans that address patient-specific needs, adapt to progress, and support long-term communication and cognitive outcomes. • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team to achieve quality outcomes, while ensuring precise, timely documentation that meets all professional, ethical, and regulatory standards.
• Knowledge and ability to provide preceptorship to graduate students, fostering clinical skill development and professional growth in alignment with the company's educational mission.

Physical Demands
• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear
• Sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds

Salary

Pay: 60.00 - $70.00 per hour
