What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking high level project lead and technical contributor to support the program development of access delay (specifically the Mobile Vault). The successful candidate is required to have a strong technical background and have a proven record of leading and contributing to technical teams. They will work with both experienced and junior staff members and technologists and will ultimately be responsible for the successful design, testing, evaluation, management, and deployment of the Mobile Vault and other physical protection technologies. They will also be responsible for helping develop new customers, both externally facing and within the laboratory with a strong focus on customer and program development.

On a given day the successful candidate will be:

• Briefing high level stakeholders, partnering with end-users to develop Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), interfacing with commercial partners, providing direction to technical teams, developing customers, and serve as the mechanical systems lead for the Mobile Vault.
• Leading a fast paced, cross disciplinary team developing new capabilities for the DoW and DOE to support the physical security of assets and materials.
• Leading and contributing to key national security challenges with real world impact and near-term fielding and deployment.

Due to the nature of this work the selected applicant will need to work onsite and be able to travel occasionally.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
• Active DOE Q clearance or Equivalent

Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Mechanical Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

• Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
• Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

• Has demonstrated experience as a successful technical & project leader for complex projects including integrated electrical and mechanical systems with rigorous system requirements.
• Demonstrated capability to produce and review professional technical documentation (reports and presentations) and presenting this information to high-level audiences.
• Track record of project and program development as demonstrated through developing new customers, building new programs and capabilities.
• Ability to accommodate moderate domestic and occasional international travel
• Experience in weapon systems integration.
• Experience developing requirements for complex systems with multiple stakeholders. Examples include weapon system requirements and Protection Level-1 (nuclear weapon) physical security system requirements.
• Experience qualifying hardware to meet requirements.
• Experience leading large ($5M+ efforts), multi-year programs involving multiple stakeholders.
• Experience/exposure to various manufacturing methods including conventional machining, additive manufacturing, and composite materials fabrication.
• Experience field testing and working in a laboratory environment around heavy tools and equipment.
• Demonstrated experience partnering and collaborating across the laboratory, industry, and academia.
• Experience in, and desire to perform, performance testing, technology development, and challenging system integration work.
• An understanding of Access Delay principles
• Experience conducting fixed site and transportation vulnerability analysis (VA), site assessments and understanding of the DEPO methodology.
• Experience designing and creating professional solid models and drawing packages.

About Our Team

The Access Delay and Structural Assessment Department at Sandia National Laboratories designs and tests physical security delay barrier systems to protect critical assets and attractive targets from theft and sabotage. The department works for various customers internal to the laboratory, the Department of War (DoW) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to ensure the protection of high value assets at domestic and international facilities. This position will be responsible for coordinating, supporting, and leading the development of the Mobile Vault, a high security transportation and storage asset to protect critical assets. The successful candidate will be responsible for program development, technical leadership, and execution of the program all while balancing evolving stakeholder requirements

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
